Pete Carroll NFL speculation fades away, never dies

Pete Carroll

With a few weeks remaining in the NFL's regular season, it's time to play who's out and who's in.

As playoff teams?

No, as head coaches.

The Sporting News lists USC's Pete Carroll as the No. 1 contender among college coaches for an NFL head coaching job. No surprise there. Among former NFL coaches, Bill Cowher is No. 1.

Of course, there are many reasons why Carroll might not leave USC, as the Times' NFL columnist, Sam Farmer, pointed out this week.
