Next up in 3-D: NBA All-Star events -- and this time in 80 theaters

5:15 PM, December 9, 2008

Dwight Howard flew during the last Slam Dunk Contest.

The NBA plans to announce Wednesday that it will broadcast its All-Star Saturday Night events -- the slam-dunk contest, the three-point shooting contest and the skills challenge -- in 3-D at 80 theaters across the U.S on Feb. 14. This year's All-Star game is in Phoenix and will be broadcast on television by TNT.

Remember the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard, wearing a Superman cape and T-shirt, sailing toward the basket during the last slam-dunk competition (see photo above)? Imagine that in 3-D.

Last week, the NFL broadcast its Thursday night game between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders in 3-D and available in only three theaters (Los Angeles, Boston and New York) as an invitation-only event.

Suzanne Moore of Cinedigm, which will distribute the 3-D game to theaters, said she expected the ticket price to be set somewhere between $18 and $22. The only Los Angeles-area theater to offer the broadcast will be the Ultrastar Apple Valley 14 in Apple Valley.

The show will also be available at two San Diego-area locations -- the Del Mar Highlands 6 and Mission Valley 7 theaters.
