Dodger notes: Trevor Hoffman, Rafael Furcal and more

December 8, 2008 |  9:29 pm

Hoffman_250The Dodgers are “thinking about” pursuing closer Trevor Hoffman (pictured at right) because of uncertainties about Takashi Saito’s health and Jonathan Broxton’s ability to handle the role.

Of Broxton, General Manager Ned Colletti said, “I don’t know if we know yet where he’s at.”

Also: The Dodgers reopened talks with Rafael Furcal’s agent tonight, but Colletti said he remained firm in his refusal to offer the shortstop a four-year deal. Furcal missed 4½ months because of back surgery this year. ... Shortstop Ivan DeJesus, the Dodgers’ minor league player of the year, is not major-league ready, Colletti said. ... Asked who would be the Dodgers’ fifth starter next season, Colletti said, “Maybe (Jason) Schmidt, maybe (Eric) Stults, maybe somebody that’s not here yet.” ... The Dodgers believe that September call-up A.J. Ellis is capable of backing up Russell Martin at catcher.

it would be terrible as a Padres fan to see Trevor in a Dodger uniform, but at least he has a chance to play on a competitive team in his twilight years.
