Oh, those former college football coaches ... give them a Legends’ poll and watch the mascot fur fly.

This week, former Arizona State Coach Frank Kush can say ‘I told you so’ while former Auburn Coach Pat Dye may get an angry letter from AARP.

Last week, 17 of the 18 coaches had Texas at No. 1, with Kush the lone dissenter.

Kush had Alabama on top.

This week, all 17 came to Kush’s side and made Alabama a unanimous pick.

The Legends’ are also not enamored with Texas Tech -- what win over No.1 Texas?

The coaches’ top five are Alabama, Penn State, Florida, Texas Tech and Texas. USC is No. 7.

But what got into Pat Dye, who has Penn State at No. 7?

I did a a Google search to see if I could connect any public animosity between Penn State Coach Joe Paterno and Dye and couldn’t come up with anything ...

Paterno, of course, was quoted years ago as saying he wouldn’t retire because he didn’t want to leave college football to the ‘Jackie Sherrills and Barry Switzers,’ coaches who had run afoul of NCAA rules, but neither man is a Legends poll voters. Paterno, by the way, thought his comments were off the record. Oops.

Maybe Dye just doesn’t think Penn State is very good. He was not quoted in the poll story posted by Sporting News today.

At least there was consensus on another front. Former USC and UCLA coaches John Robinson and Terry Donahue both have USC at No. 5.
