UFC 89 card to be televised for free Saturday

October 17, 2008 |  1:50 pm

Michael Bisping, left, and Josh Haynes

These days, it's hard to find anything for free -- including a pay-per-view quality, mixed martial arts event that you can enjoy without ever leaving your sofa.

That's right, UFC 89 is coming to Spike TV on Saturday night, and those who tune in beginning at 9 p.m. can watch Michael Bisping take on Chris Leben in a three-round middleweight main event. This fight figures to be a regular donnybrook.

The undercard is just as enticing, with light heavyweights Keith Jardine and Brandon Vera trying to shake off recent uninspiring performances. Vera has lost two of his last three and looked sluggish in his victory last July against Andy Reese after dropping down to light heavyweight. Jardine is coming off a fight in which he got knocked cold in the first round against Wanderlei Silva.

I had lunch with Bisping a few weeks ago, while he was training in Huntington Beach, and he had some interesting things to say about growing up in England and the evolution of his career. Check back later this evening for the full story on The Times' online sports page.
