Patrick O’Sullivan’s new three-year agreement with the Kings is worth $8,775,000. He will earn $4 million this season and $2,387,500 in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. He will then be a year away from unrestricted free agency.

‘When it goes this long, I don’t think either party is going to say they won,’ said O’Sullivan’s agent, Pat Morris of Newport Sports Management in Toronto.

‘We would have liked a little more and they would have liked a whole lot less but everybody wants this done. Patrick is excited to get back on the ice.’

If they’d tried for a four-year deal, Morris said, ‘we might have spent the rest of the year negotiating.’ That wouldn’t have helped either side.

Morris said O’Sullivan has been working out in Denver, where his girlfriend lives. ‘He’s in the best shape he can be in without having been to training camp,’ Morris said. ‘He thinks he’s ready to go, but whether he gets into that first game, the coach will decide.’

Incidentally, Morris’ agency represents several other Kings, including Drew Doughty, Jarret Stoll, Matt Greene, Brad Richardson and Alexander Frolov. So you’ll hear his name and the agency’s name come up often in the future.

Here’s what the Kings have to say on their website about the deal that will ‘lock up Sully for three years.’
