John McCain is lapping Barack Obama with the NASCAR vote, right?

You’d think so, but the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll reveals that McCain and Obama are tied among NASCAR fans.

This is despite heavy courting of NASCAR Nation by the McCain campaign, especially in the swing states of North Carolina, Virginia and New Hampshire.

McCain, with his wife Cindy at his side, spoke before a NASCAR race in New Hampshire. Cindy McCain appeared at Lowe’s Motor Speedway outside Charlotte, N.C. And Todd Palin, husband of McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin, appeared Sunday at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia.

There was discussion last summer that Obama would campaign at a NASCAR event. There was even a report that Obama was considering sponsoring a car.

But even though he hasn’t been as aggressive in his NASCAR campaigning, he did buy space on a NASCAR video game.
