Michigan was upset, 13-10, today by Toledo, which could give Wolverines and UCLA fans bad flashbacks.

The last time Michigan lost to Toledo? In 2000, when the Wolverines lost to Coach Bob Toledo and UCLA, 23-20. As bad as that was for Michigan folks, Bruins fans will remember it as another IOU that wasn’t paid off during the Toledo Era.

Michigan was ranked third at the time and the victory propelled the Bruins to No. 6 in the polls. They waltzed into Oregon’s Autzen Stadium the next week and lost to the Ducks.

UCLA lost six of its last nine games. The following season, UCLA won its first six games and was ranked fourth, then lost four of its last five games. A year later, Bruins fans were beginning to ask, ‘What about Bob?’ Things like handicap placards and DeShaun Foster began to matter.

The Karl Dorrell Era was on the horizon.

What’s that all mean? Well, five years later, Dorrell has begotten Rick Neuheisel, Michigan lost to Toledo and the Bruins play Oregon tonight.
