John Wooden got it right, retiring at age 64 after a national title.

But so few high-profile college basketball coaches since then, as ESPN’s Pat Forde points out, have been able to manage that, most recently Arizona’s Lute Olson.

Gently showing an old coach who has done so much for a school out the door -- see Joe Paterno -- has got to be one of the toughest jobs for an athletic director. But that’s why they call it management.
