Derek Lowe puts Red Sox atop his list

October 20, 2008 |  5:48 pm

Derek Lowe

Derek Lowe has told the Boston Globe that his first choice would be to return to the Red Sox, with whom he won a World Series ring in 2004. He signed with the Dodgers before the 2005 season.

Writes Nick Cafardo on Boston.com:

Lowe told this reporter that while money is important, he wants to go to a quality organization committed to winning, and no organization, in his mind, fits that description better than Boston.

It remains to be seen how much interest Boston has in the 35-year-old Lowe.  Lowe, who is represented by Scott Boras, is supposed to meet with Dodger Manager Joe Torre to discuss his future.

Considering Lowe has put his Manhattan Beach house on the market, that meeting with Joe Torre might consist of what flavor cake the pitcher wants for his going away party. ;)

As much as I liked Lowe when he was with the Sox in 2004, as well as he's pitched since then, and as much as I wouldn't mind seeing him back with the Sox in 2009, I don't think it will happen for two reasons. 1~ He'll want too much money (make that Bora$$ will want too much money.) 2~ He'll be 35 y.o. The trend is towards younger and less expensive players who are just hitting their prime, not top dollar stars who are just about to start their declines. He'll need to take a serious pay cut to be the #4 starter in Boston next year.

bringing derek back should be at the dodgers priority list...as well as bringing brad penny back and shoring up their bullpen....manny would be nice but would cost to much money......if by some miracle they could free money up by dumping jason schmit, andrew jones and possibly juan pierre(although hes better than given credit for) than manny might actually become a reality..............hope they also seriously consider bringing back casey blake as well....

Come home Derek. We want you back in Boston.
Do it Theo.

Lowe is a very average pitcher, a #3 in most decent rotations. He at times looks like a #1, but other times a #5. What he does well is eat innings. He was overpaid in LA. He'd need to take a pay cut to pay for anyone other than the Yankees or Red Sox. If he comes back with LA I'd expect him to be listed as the #1 again, but in reality to be the 3rd guy behind the two young ones. Maddux is gone. Penny and Schmidt, if kept, will battle with a couple youngsters for #5 job. Kuroda is locked in at #3 or #4. If Lowe leaves a free agent wil be brought in. Manny is affordable if Penny and Lowe are let loose, but do they really want manny?

derek should be back in boston.. im chuckling now that the yanks are trying for him and sabathia also.. go ahead and have cc ... if you see Lowe respects boston , the organization and the fans.. we loved him then , we love him now..and he can come back home..where he belongs..... the yanks still think if they spend $$$ mega dollars thats what i takes to win.. read what Lowe wants.. he said "$ is important" but also he wants to be with a winning organization.. can the yanks say that anymore ?? nope
