‘Amazing Race’ to New Zealand ... Now it’s time to ‘Dance’

OK, just spitballin’ here, but could it possibly be mere coincidence that on ‘The Amazing Race 13,’ one couple is Tina and Ken, the former NFL player and college coach who has cheated on Tina and who is now trying to make amends by traveling around the world to climb swaying-in-the-wind needle-pointed towers in Auckland, New Zealand, after flying from La Paz, Bolivia, and that another team is brother and sister Ken and Starr (real name?) Spangler?

Why is that coincidence? Because it just so happens Starr (real name?) is a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. And she’s even on a page on the 2008 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Calendar. You don’t think Tina might be a little worried about her admitedly prone-to-cheating husband in close quarters with a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader who is traveling with her brother?

Ken and Tina finished first again Sunday, though they chose to use one of only two fast forwards when they were already in first place. But by winning the leg they won a vacation to Rio. Hopefully, Ken and Tina will still be traveling together by that time!

My second-favorite couple, Arizona State frat buddies Andrew Lappitt and Dan Honig, scraped by another week, finishing sixth. ‘Sixth, that’s the best we’ve finished,’ one of them said. I could hear Pac-10 fans everywhere laughing at that. It could be Arizona State’s motto: ‘Sixth, the best we finish! Go, Sun Devils!’

Tonight is the live (except on West Coast) dance competition on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’

As I’ve watched this season, I’ve begun to think about sports personalities who should go on the show.

For example, gold-medal balance beam winner Shawn Johnson said she’d like to be on the show. Who wouldn’t like to see supercompetitive Michael Jordan try to master a new genre -- basketball, baseball, gambling, ballroom dancing -- that would make Michael the new Renaissance man?

Wouldn’t you like to see Tommy Lasorda in the Cloris Leachman role -- old, mean and funny?

Now that she’s out of prison, disgraced track star Marion Jones could make amends by doing a drug-free waltz and maybe even find a hunky new boyfriend (Maks, did anyone say Maks, Misty May-Treanor’s currently unemployed partner)?

And, come on, Matt Leinart. You took ballroom dancing at USC. You’re hardly getting any quarterback reps in Arizona. At least you could remind people during the intros each week that you were once a Heisman-winning quarterback.

Anybody else have any athletic favorites they’d like to see on the next version of ‘Dancing With the Stars’? I’d love to hear them.
