Midday musings: Merkle to Flea to Nahan

September 23, 2008 |  4:40 pm

It's been 100 years since the Fred Merkle ... incident? Blunder? Thing? Keith Olbermann, not super-busy these days, writes about it in Sports Illustrated. Ed Sherman has another take on ESPN.com. And the NYT weighs in, with a very cool photo.

Flea It might be time for USC to update those commercials that feature all the famous people who went to school there. John Wayne...Neil Armstrong...George Lucas...possible future First Lady Cindy McCain...and now, Flea!

The L.A. Daily News is moving to new digs in Woodland Hills...21 years after it moved to new digs in Woodland Hills. Before that, as Dennis McCarthy recalls, the offices were in the heart of Van Nuys, which we, like Dennis, preferred. First, it gave us our shortest commute ever, about a mile. Second, better dining choices nearby. Third, you've gotta love a place that Jack Kent Cooke loudly dismissed as a "rabbit warren" during a walk-through the day he bought it.

OK, so welcome to blogging's version of Tinker to Evers to Chance. Tom Hoffarth in his Daily News blog mentions a long-forgotten appearance "Hawaii Five-O." Awful Announcing finds it on Youtube. Dodger Thoughts links to Awful Announcing. We see it there. And here it is. Kind of cool. Youtube must be filled with clips of sports announcers appearing on old TV shows and movies. Tom Harmon in "The Rose Bowl Story" anyone? Stu Nahan in "Raging Bull?" Chick Hearn in "Bowling for Dollars?" In the oeuvre of Dick Enberg, something tells me there are some old "Sports Challenge" episodes floating around, if anyone wants to find those. Or, maybe a "Where's Huddles?" Send us your links!

That's plenty for now.
