Get yer $hea $tadium artifacts

September 29, 2008 |  8:28 pm

SheaBanks are failing and Wall Street is in a panic, but a memorabilia company is betting that there are people willing to spend upward of $10,000 for pieces of New York's Shea Stadium.

The Meigray Group is handling the sale of banners, foul poles, signs, pieces of the outfield wall and other parts of Shea, which will be knocked down and replaced by nearby Citi Field next season. To get first dibs on items and get "platinum" privileges, Meigray required would-be bidders to place $10,000 non-refundable deposits. Once the platinum folks were done, the "gold" folks -- who had to leave a $5,000 deposit -- got to tag what they wanted. Last was "silver" at a mere $2,500.

Spend less than your deposit amount, and you don't get your money back.

Nice. And who said the best things in life are free?

At least the Mets allowed current and former staff members and invited guests to walk on the field at no charge at the stadium finale Sunday.
