The Angels tied a franchise record with their 99th victory of the season Thursday night, and they’re one win away from clinching the best record in the American League and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

But instead of comparing his team’s performance with the 2002 Angels, the only other team in franchise history to win 99 games, Manager Mike Scioscia and his coaches found themselves looking back to 2001, when the Seattle Mariners won 116 games.

‘We’ve played terrific baseball this season, and we’re proud of our record, but it makes what the Mariners did when they won 116 games in 2001 an even more incredible accomplishment,’ Scioscia said. ‘It really puts that in perspective.’
