Scared yet? Deadmau5 finally releases full-length, hits L.A. on Halloween
You'd be hard-pressed to find one dance music fan who doesn't swear by Toronto's Deadmau5 (pronounced Deadmouse). Born Joel Zimmerman, the electro/house purveyor announced today that he would release his first physical compact disc release, "Random Album Title" (out digitally Sept. 2 and in stores Nov. 4) and tour in support of the Ultra Records disc this fall.
His Los Angeles date? Oct. 31 at the Shrine Auditorium as part of a yet-to-be-officially-announced full lineup at a forthcoming HARD haunted mansion. We caught up with Zimmerman via phone on the Spanish resort Island of Ibiza, where he is scheduled to play Amnesia tomorrow.
Zimmerman talks about what tracks will make his debut disc (around eight of which are previously unreleased and won’t be released all the way up until this winter), his upcoming Puma/Beatport sponsored 50+ city tour, forthcoming material from his side-project BSOD and even his Halloween costume he may debut in L.A. this year at Hard plus more after the jump...
Do you ever stop touring?
Lately, no.
So you are finally putting out a physical compact disc this fall. Are you excited at all? Or do you figure most of your fans already have their own CDs made via MP3s they have already downloaded.
Yeah I actually am excited. This is more of an "IOU" release because everyone’s just been blagging me to get something out. What I’ve done is I’ve taken a lot of unreleased tracks and made a mix compilation. It will be distributed by Ministry [of Sound] in the UK and Ultra in the States. It’s been stressful getting it out.
Will the versions of new songs like “Slip” be different than what is up on your MySpace page?
They’ll be slightly the same. Obviously the ones on my MySpace are just clips; the record will have eight-minute-long tracks. [ed note: versions of club staples like "Arguru" and "Faxing Berlin" and one of his collaborations with Kaskade, "I Remember," will be on "Random Album Title"].
Will you be wearing a costume different than the mouse head for your L.A. Halloween show?
That I’m gonna leave as a blank for now. I have a funny-ass idea that I’m gonna roll out with. I’ll be doing something really retarded for Halloween for sure.
What’s going on with [your side project with onetime Santa Monica resident Steve Duda] BSOD? Can we expect a tour ever or new material soon?
I’ve stolen him from you guys. I need him! I got him a Canadian work permit visa and he is now living with me in Toronto. Actually, we both signed deals on a couple of condo units here in Toronto. I’m moving the mousetrap lab to a different part of town. We are working on some very crazy cool things right now which I don’t want to openly discuss just yet. There is a very good reason why BSOD has been slow lately, but there is more coming for sure. We took his dog, too.
Finally, are you going to hit the beach tomorrow in Ibiza?
I’m gonna hit the laptop!

I've seen Deadmau5 at several massive raves in the greater Los Angeles area. He is absolutely amazing. I've been a huge fan for several years and I was very surprised to see this article in the Los Angeles Times. If you haven't heard, take a listen. You will fall in love with this silly little mouse.
