'Game of Thrones': Alfie Allen talks poor, misguided Theon Greyjoy

Game of ThronesTheon Greyjoy spent most of the second season of "Game of Thrones" making one bad decision after another in his quest to rule Winterfell in Robb Stark's absence. But after a series of increasingly despicable acts, he finally got a chance to shine in the season finale, rallying the troops before reaching quite an unexpected conclusion.

For actor Alfie Allen, that scene was one of his favorites of the entire season. The 25-year-old British actor (who's the brother of singer Lily Allen and son of actor and musician Keith Allen) has had a career on stage, television and film, but his role as Theon is his highest-profile to date. He spoke about his character and the season finale in advance of the episode's Sunday airing.

Would you describe Theon as misguided? Selfish?

I'd say both of those words. Definitely. On the selfish side of it, he's looking for a bit of status. He wants to be Prince Theon and he wants to have the ability to make his own decisions and decide his own fate, which has never happened in his life.  But he's also misguided -- he's trying to do things because he wants approval from his father. He thinks to achieve respect from the people in Winterfell, he needs to rule through fear. And that's never a good way to start off things.

But he just wants love. He wants to have this idyllic family with his sister. But it doesn't turn out that way. And when it doesn't, it leads him to make more of these decisions that he didn't usually make. I think Theon's trying to assert his power to the fullest of his abilities and to do that means doing despicable things. Even if that's not who he is deep down. I think in Episode 10 you see everything come back around and he realizes that maybe that wasn't the way to go about things. But he still knows he must continue in that same vein, because if he doesn't he may not respect himself. It's funny. In that scene in Episode 10, he finally gains the respect of his soldiers through being ready to die.

Your final scene in Episode 10 was one of your favorites from the season, correct?

It's cool. I shouldn't say he goes out in a heroic blaze, because he's not a hero. But he goes out in a blaze. People betray him that he put his trust in. I hope it was one of those points where you find yourself rooting for someone you didn't like for the whole series. When you see how badly he wants it, you'll find yourself rooting for him slightly. It'll twist your moral compass a bit.

What has been the public reaction to your character's despicable behavior?

Different. Some people hate me. Some people throw their arm around me and say, "Mate, I know where you're coming from." I think Theon is one of the most human characters on the show, to be honest. There's a lot people can relate to in real life. It definitely made it easier for me to play the character because I think it’s a universal theme that people are looking for the approval of their parents the whole time.

You were left to interperet Theon on your own, independent from how he's portrayed in the books?

Yeah, in the books Theon sets out to betray the Starks. That doesn't put him in a good light straightaway. So when we were talking about it in the first series, David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] were saying they were going to go there in a different way. So that he doesn't really know what he's doing. The way I wanted to play it was that he's going over to Pyke to enjoy a bit of status and also form an alliance between Robb and the Greyjoys and possibly command his own army into battle and to get the approval and respect of his father. But it all gets thrown back in his face and he's forced to make these brash decisions and he's pushed past the point of no return. He just has to carry on being that person. It's very sad.

Did that make it more palatable to you as an actor, to make him more sympathetic?

Definitely. It was something I set out to do.... There's a lot of people who sympathize with him and in a weird way, respect him. I just think there's a lot people can relate to.

In the first season you were part of the ensemble. In the second season your character was isolated from the rest of the main cast and brought to the front. Was losing the ensemble unnerving?

Not unnerving. It was funny that most of the people in my storyline were new characters, so often I found myself putting my arm around people saying, "Don't worry. Don't be nervous. I've been here before. I've done that." Being a "Game of Thrones" vet was a funny feeling. There were points during the first season where I was nervous, but I couldn't wait to get around to it. When I started to see some of the scenes they were adding for me...

There's Theon's final scene in Episode 10 that wasn't planned. And they wrote it halfway through the shooting of Season 2. I couldn't wait to get around to doing it. I didn't put much pressure on myself, to be honest. I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. I'm just trying to prove it to myself.  That's the whole thing about doing TV and film, there's the delayed reaction. In theater you get the feedback and approval straightaway and you feel good about what you've done. On TV, there’s the torturous waiting for five months.

Is this the longest you've been with a character?

It's definitely the longest I've been with a character. It's part of my life. I see Theon as me. But I see that in any job I do. You have to find similiarites in any character you play. As an actor, that's one of the challenges. When you get a part you make it real to yourself. And to make it real, you bring parts of yourself into the character.

After two years, do you still find new things about the character?

Massively, man! All the time. It'll come to you in a weird way. You think you have to sit in a room and think about it for ages, but it's not like that. You're constantly thinking about it. You'll be walking up the stairs and it comes to you. Really, that's being an actor. You torture yourself about it and then you move on. One thing that took me awhile to realize was that Theon has a determination to succeed. And that’s definitely something I've got. I definitely want to succeed as an actor.

How much time do you spend filming in Ireland?

All in all, about 30 days, but the shoot takes about four months. 30 days spaced over those four months.

The weather doesn’t get you down?

No, it's all in keeping with the show isn't it? It's good. I remember last time it was one of the coldest winters they'd had on record in 25 years. For us, it was quite difficult in the first season but HBO treated us well. They give us nice trailers we can go retire to. The armor helps us get into character too. It can get a little tiresome at times when you want to sit down and have lunch. You have to position your sword in the gaps in the chairs and stuff but it all helps. I love it.

'Facts of Life' mini-reunion on 'Watch What Happens Live'

Mindy Cohn and Kim Fields dished on "The Facts of Life" when the two sitcom actresses were reunited on "Watch What Happens Live"
Actresses Mindy Cohn and Kim Fields (better known as Natalie and Tootie from "The Facts of Life") sat down with "Watch What Happens Live" host Andy Cohen on Thursday night for a mini "Facts of Life" reunion.

Cohen couldn't help but pepper the two with questions about the sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1979 to 1988.

Which of the actresses was the first to lose her virginity? Cohn, whose character was the first of the Eastland girls to have sex, told Cohen that art really did reflect life. (An admission Cohn said would probably upset her parents, who were watching).

Was there a moment when the actors knew the series had jumped the shark? Cohn admitted to remembering "a few." Including the time, "when Edna's Edibles turned into another frickin' store."

Which actress was the biggest partier? Cohn. (Both Fields and Cohn agreed on that one).

Who did Fields prefer? Charlotte Rae or Cloris Leachman? Fields had to go with Rae, because she was there at the beginning.

Was there anything the girls didn't want to reveal to Cohen? Yes. The gabby Bravo host asked Cohn about the rumor that the actress is godmother to Brad Pitt's and Angelina Jolie's kids. Cohn chose to take the 5th on that one.

TLC’s 'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' spin-off of 'Toddlers & Tiaras'

Alana Thompson

Couldn't get enough of Alana Thompson, the outspoken 6-year-old beauty queen from TLC's "Toddlers & Tiaras"? Or did you see her on TV and hoped she would quietly go away? It doesn't matter how you feel because TLC just ordered up six episodes of the little girl's own reality series anyway. Of course, she may be better known by her other name: Honey Boo Boo.

The TLC series "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," debuting in August, will follow the Go-Go Juice-swilling pageant champ to her family home in rural Georgia, where the Thompson clan indulges in their favorite pastimes, such as free-wheeling through mud pits and picking up road kill for grilling.

The Thompson family includes Alana's stay-at-home mom, June, chalk-miner dad Sugar Bear, and her sisters: 12-year-old Lauryn "Pumpkin," 15-year-old Jessica "Chubbs" and 17-year-old Anna "Chickadee" (who's pregnant).

Honey Boo Boo isn't the first "Toddlers & Tiaras" break-out star. Earlier this year, 7-year-old Eden Wood got her own reality show on Logo, titled "Eden's World." The series followed Eden and her mother as they went from home in Arkansas to New York City. Eden also has a budding singing career, with her first single, "Cutie Patootie," debuting on "The Talk" in 2010.

Luckily, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" looks to keep the country girl in the country. For better or worse.

Kathie Lee Gifford's 'Today' interview with Martin Short gets awkward

Martin Short

Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb have cultivated a breezy, anything-goes atmosphere for their fourth hour of NBC's "Today" show, but that seeming lack of preparation worked against Gifford on Wednesday during an otherwise routine interview with Martin Short, who was there promoting his new animated film "Madagascar 3."

Gifford asked about Short's children and then began talking about Short's wife, Nancie.

"And he and Nancie have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?" Gifford asked.

One problem: Short's wife died in 2010 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

After a brief stumble, Short answered Gifford's question straight, giving no hint of her error. "Um ... married 36 years," he responded.

Still clueless, Gifford continued her questioning. "But you're still in love?"

"Madly in love," Short responded.

"Why?" Gifford wanted to know.

"I'm cute," Short said.

And then the conversation moved on. Unless viewers had knowledge of Nancie's death (which was widely reported by the media at the time), they would have been oblivious to the conversation's awkwardness.

After a return from a commercial break, Gifford apologized on air and explained that Short informed her after the segment of his wife's passing.

"I feel so badly," Gifford said.

Justin Bieber to star in prime-time network special

Justin Bieber
The Justin Bieber celebrity train isn't slowing down. The pop singer's new album comes out June 15 and one week later, he's set to star in his first prime-time network TV special: "Justin Bieber: All Around the World" on NBC.

The format of the special is a mix of behind-the-scenes documentary footage and live performances from Bieber's seven-country, 12-day promotional tour for the new album, titled "Believe." (Why not "Beliebe"?)

If that sounds familiar, it's virtually the same format as Bieber's big-screen film from last year, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," which followed the Bieb's tour to promote his previous album.

But the near-identical nature of the films doesn't mean that the march of progress has completely passed Bieber. The new NBC special will feature one technological innovation known as the "Justin-Cam," which will give viewers a look at life through the eyes of Justin Bieber.

The second single from the new album, "Die in Your Arms," was released this week.

Tim Daly tweets that he's been let go from 'Private Practice'

Tim Daly
Tim Daly has been with "Private Practice" from the "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff's first days, but though the series has been picked up for a sixth season, Daly won't be there. According to the actor, he's been given his walking papers.

On his Twitter feed on Tuesday, Daly broke the news to fans: "Wonderful fans of PPP. Shonda informed my agent today that Pete wont be returning for season 6. It was a great 5 yrs. R.I.P. Pete Wilder."

A spokeswoman for ABC said the network does not comment on contracts.

The fifth-season finale of "Private Practice" saw Daly's character avoiding a prison sentence for the actions he took with a patient and reconciling with his wife. But the character's Get Out of Jail Free card apparently didn't carry over to his role in the series as a whole.

"Private Practice" creator Shonda Rhimes hasn't commented publicly yet on Daly's departure, though she wrote an extended goodbye to two cast members of "Grey's Anatomy" who left the show following its eighth-season finale.

Actresses Chyler Leigh and Kim Raver left that series at the end of the season, with Leigh's character, Lexie, killed off and Raver's character, Teddy, leaving the hospital for another job.

Upset that both characters are leaving the show, Rhimes wrote, "I don't like life changing in an instant and turning on a dime."

MSNBC host Chris Hayes apologizes for troop comments

Chris Hayes
Chris Hayes, host of "Up With Chris Hayes" on MSNBC, has apologized for comments he made about American soldiers during a pre-Memorial Day discussion Sunday.

During a discussion of family notification about the death of a loved one on the battlefield, Hayes told his panel, "I think it is very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words 'heroes.' Why do I feel so [uncomfortable] about the word 'hero'? I feel comfortable — uncomfortable — about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war."

While Hayes went on to say that he didn't mean to disrespect those fallen soldiers who truly were heroes — and even qualified his statement by saying he might be wrong in his thinking — he set off a controversy nonetheless.

After a day of angry comments from bloggers, Tweeters and commenters, Hayes released a statement on his website, apologizing for his comments.

"On Sunday, in discussing the uses of the word 'hero' to describe those members of the armed forces who have given their lives, I don't think I lived up to the standards of rigor, respect and empathy for those affected by the issues we discuss that I've set for myself. I am deeply sorry for that."

'Hell's Kitchen's' Gordon Ramsay out of hospital after soccer injury

Gordon Ramsay

Gordon Ramsay, the ill-tempered chef and host of Fox's "Hell's Kitchen," ended up in the hospital on Sunday following an injury at a charity soccer game.

According to People, the celebrity chef suffered a particularly hard tackle from former professional soccer player Teddy Sheringham at the Soccer Aid game in Manchester, England, and was carried off the field with an oxygen mask on. Ramsay once aspired to be a professional soccer player himself, but a knee injury forced his interests to be diverted to cooking.

On Monday, Ramsay tweeted: "Thx 4 all the messages. Out of hospital after receiving amazing care from medics at ground & hospital. Bit sore but fine Gx."

Will Ferrell also suffered a leg injury during the same match, which raised $6.4 million for the charity UNICEF.

The chef's injury comes just as Ramsay is starting to promote the upcoming seasons of his two Fox shows, the 10th season of "Hell's Kitchen" and the third season of "MasterChef," both of which premiere on Monday.

Anthony Bourdain to join CNN in 2013

Anthony Bourdain will be joining CNN in 2013 with a new travel and food show

This post has been updated. See the note below for details.

Anthony Bourdain, the globe-trotting chef and food pontificator, is joining CNN as a host and commentator on the things he knows best: food and travel.

Beginning in 2013, Bourdain will be bringing his expertise to a new weekly CNN show airing on the weekends. He'll also be appearing across CNN's programming, offering commentary.

Bourdain is joining the network to bolster its weekend programming. CNN has been experiencing a pronounced ratings slump, with the channel's April ratings down an average of 21% from the same month a year ago.

In a statement, Bourdain said, "I'm really looking forward to coming over to CNN. I think the world is going to get a whole lot bigger for me. I hope that old fans and new ones will be excited about what's coming down the road."

Bourdain's deal with CNN is exclusive, so it looks as if we've seen the last of Bourdain's previous series "No Reservations," which has aired on the Travel Channel since 2005. The show's eighth season is coming to a close next week.

Bourdain's as-yet-untitled new show will continue in the same vein as "No Reservations," with Bourdain traveling to exotic locales to experience the local cuisine and customs. The same production company which produces "No Reservations," Zero Point Zero Productions, will be joining Bourdain on his CNN endeavor, so for fans of the author and host, the changes won't be that drastic.

[Updated, 11:45 a.m. May 29: According to CNN Worldwide executive vice president Mark Whitaker, Bourdain's new program will "evolve a little bit" but still retain the basics of "No Reservations."

"It will still have the things that make the show distinctive," Whitaker said Tuesday. "He travels the world and takes you into the different cultures. His unique voice and perspective are still there."

Bourdain's new program will retain the same split-season format of "No Reservations," with a first season of 16 episodes, divided into two eight-episode runs.

Whitaker also said Bourdain joining CNN is just one part of more changes coming to the ratings-challenged news channel.

"We're looking at a lot of things," he said. "We're actively involved now more than we've been in the past, both with developing ideas internally and hearing ideas from outside production companies."

[Updated, 2:30 p.m., May 29: Fans of Bourdain's shows on the Travel Channel won't be entirely at a loss with the announcement of his impending departure for CNN.

According to a Travel Channel spokeswoman, "As part of Travel Channel's strategic repositioning of the brand and its core programming mission, the network has been aggressively developing new talent, new voices and new shows, as announced last year. Anthony Bourdain has been an iconic figure at Travel Channel for eight groundbreaking seasons of the Emmy Award-winning 'No Reservations' and he just finished shooting the latest season of 'No Reservations.' Additionally, we just began filming with Tony for Season Two of 'The Layover.' Original episodes of both series will run through 2013 and Bourdain programs will always have a home on Travel Channel. We are proud of the great storytelling Tony has brought to the network. We congratulate him on his new venture and look forward to working with him on new projects in the future."]

'American Idol' finale: Fans react to Phillip Phillips' triumph

Phillip PhillipsPhillip Phillips was named the new winner of "American Idol" on Wednesday night, and if viewers had a feeling of deja vu, it's probably because they were remembering back to last season's finale and the winner, Scotty McCreery.

Phillips' resemblance to McCreery wasn't lost on fans, especially after McCreery tweeted a photo of the two "Idol" winners side-by-side just after Phillips won.

"Welcome to the family man. Proud of you," McCreery tweeted. The photo on the tweet makes them look almost like twins.

According to Fox, Wednesday night's "Idol" finale broke a social media record, with over 1 million social media comments created in reaction to the show and its winner. But based on a quick spin through the Twitter-sphere, there were two issues many people focused on, and neither were good for Phillips' long-term career chances: his name and his race.

The Twitter feed Amber Riley Fan pegged the issue precisely with this tweet: "David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee Dewyze, Scotty McCreery and now Phillip Phillips. Fifth straight tear of 'White guy with guitar'."

The "white guy with guitar" phrase cropped up a lot.

"American Idol as usual, White Guy With Guitar wins. If Phillip Phillips wins the title, Jessica Sanchez wins the world!" wrote a 13-year-old high school student in the Philippines.

"Phillip Phillips another WGWG (White Guy With Guitar) .. C'mon America!!!" wrote Arriane Encinas, disappointed that Filipina contestant Jessica Sanchez didn't grab the title.

Fan Danielle Kay Acebes wrote, "Phillip Phillips is another White Guy with Acoustic Guitar singer. But he's pretty right? And that's all that matters on #AmericanIdol."

Jim Carrey couldn't resist poking fun at the name with his tweet, "Phillip Phillips win wins American Idol American Idols."

Former "Jeopardy!" champion Ken Jennings also took a swipe at Phillips' name, tweeting, "Yay, Charles Dickens' beloved "Philip Phillips" is out of debtors' prison and just won American Idol!"

Singer-songwriter Greg Holden linked his own name to the winner with his tweet, "Well done Philip Phillips! Hard to believe a song @drewwpearson & I wrote one afternoon just won American Idol."

"Idol" non-fan Annie McGraw had issues with the winner, tweeting: "I don't watch the show...but really. The new American Idol is named Phillip Phillips. I'm not okay with that, I'm sorry."

Aldus Santos wrote, "A possible tour: Phillip Phillips, Kris Kristofferson, Mr. Mister, Wet Wet Wet, Duran Duran, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Marky Mark."

Former "Idol" hopeful Briana Tyson shared her own moment in the celebrity spotlight when she tweeted, "Just so y'all know, when I auditioned for Idol this past season, Phillip Phillips sat next to me and offered me a chicken finger. #boom."

And one fan shared his thoughts quite bluntly: "Names like 'Phillip Phillips' are proof that some people are too stupid to be allowed to breed."

'True Blood' to get Mark Hudis as show runner for possible Season 6

Alan Ball"True Blood" hasn't yet been renewed by HBO for a sixth season -- Season 5 premieres June 10 -- but barring the Mayan-predicted end of the world in 2012, Sookie, Bill and the rest of the vampires, werewolves and fairies of Bon Temps will doubtless be back for more next summer. With one big difference: They'll have a new show runner guiding their adventures.

Series creator Alan Ball announced last summer that the fifth season of the show would be his last as show runner, but he's not leaving the world of vampires completely. He's staying on as executive producer, but co-executive producer Mark Hudis will be stepping up to the boss' seat.

Hudis has a long history with Ball; they worked together on the sitcom "Cybill" back in 1997. He joined the vampire drama during the show's fourth season.

Ball, meanwhile, is going on to develop his new crime series "Banshee" for Cinemax and his medical drama "Wichita" for HBO. Ball remains under a multi-year contract with HBO.

Anderson Cooper kicks 'Human Barbie' off show: 'You're dreadful'

Anderson CooperAnderson Cooper's daytime talk show was supposed to bring out the softer, cuddlier side of the silver-haired newsman. But a guest on Tuesday's episode left Cooper so disgusted, he cut the interview short and tossed her off his program.

Cooper's guest was Sarah Burge, a British woman who holds the Guinness World Record for having the most plastic surgeries in order to become a "Human Barbie." She also gave her 8-year-old daughter plastic surgery vouchers for when she turns 18 and encouraged her 15-year-old to get Botox.

Midway through his questioning, during which Burge expressed her daughter's desire not to sweat on stage and use Botox to assist with it, Cooper was pushed over the edge.

"I would prefer to actually oversee my daughter's Botox than actually have her go underground, find a voodoo witch doctor or, in fact, getting it off the Internet and administering it herself," she told Cooper.

After a pause, Cooper replied, "I honestly have nothing more to talk to you about... I try to be really polite to all my guests. I think you’re dreadful and I honestly don’t want to talk to you anymore."

Burge took it stride, replied "That's fine" and walked off the stage.

Backstage later, Cooper told his crew, "I got the feeling this was about publicity for her. I regret having her on in the first place and I regret how things ended." He continued, "It didn't seem like it was an honest discussion."

Burge later tweeted at Cooper, "Thank you America for your emails yes Anderson did make himself look an ass he has a big mouth for a LITTLE man."
