First look: AnnaSophia Robb channels SJP in ‘The Carrie Diaries’

AnnaSophia Robb doesn’t have the old Manolo Blahniks to fall back on, but she still does a credible job of evoking the image of a young Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in the first released image from ‘The Carrie Diaries.’
The pilot, based on Candace Bushnell novel of the same name, is a prequel to HBO’s much-revered ‘Sex and the City’ and promises to look at Carrie’s life in Manhattan in the ‘80s — back before she was the famous writer jetting off to the Middle East and wearing more expensive fashions than a Bergdorf Goodman mannequin.
The series has not yet been put on the CW’s schedule, but with the kind of high-profile attention the pilot is getting, there’s a good chance we’ll see it on TVs this fall.
The pilot was written by ‘Sex and the City’ vet Amy B. Harris, who is also executive producer. Harris sees just the right amount of SJP in her new star: ‘Having been a part of the ‘Sex and the City’ series, I felt such an honor and responsibility to the fans of the show to find someone who embodied the spirit of Manhattan’s favorite ‘It’ girl. When AnnaSophia Robb walked into the room, we knew we had found her. Her grace, intelligence, sense of fun and her empathetic nature make her the perfect girl to bring our young Carrie to life. The fact that she loves a gorgeous pair of heels doesn’t hurt either.’
Eric Daman, who worked with Patricia Field on costumes for ‘Sex and the City,’ is also on board for the new production, meaning the face and voice may be off, but at least the clothes will look right.
Don’t expect to see a Lil’ Big, but if the pilot does go to series, it will explore the world of love and sex in Manhattan during the Reagan years. Expect a lot of big shoulders.
