Super Bowl XLVI is flat for NBC in early ratings
It may have been a great game, but Super Bowl XLVI fell short of a record for NBC.
The championship -- a seesaw match in which Eli Manning and the New York Giants brushed past Tom Brady's New England Patriots, 21-17 -- generated a 47.8 overnight rating/71 share, according to Nielsen.
While of course a gargantuan number, it was just the third-highest overnight rating in Super Bowl history and down ever so slightly from last year's 47.9 rating.
However, final figures -- including a total-viewer tally adjusted for time zones -- will be available later Monday, so it's possible that the numbers and standings will change.
