President Obama has made it known that he is a pop culture-savvy head of state. That means that he’s happy to talk about what he’s watching on TV.

‘For the girls and me, Modern Family,’ that’s our favorite show,’ the president told People magazine.

That’s not to say that he doesn’t watch what he deems ‘darker’ TV on his own. He names two complicated and gritty dramas, HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and Showtime’s ‘Homeland’ as among his current favorites.

That’s in keeping with Obama’s past picks: Before he became president, he offered up ‘The Wire’ as his favorite show -- and Robin Hood-style thief Omar as his fave character. (‘That’s not an endorsement,’ he noted in a preelection interview. ‘He’s not my favorite person, but he’s a fascinating character.”)

It has also been reported that he watched ‘Entourage’ and ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter,’ as well as family fare such as ‘Hannah Montana’ and ‘SpongeBob SquarePants.’

And for those worried that the president is spending too much time watching TV, not to worry -- his summer reading from this summer suggests he’s not slacking on the literary front either.
