On Tuesday, unflappable NBC anchor Brian Williams managed to (mostly) maintain his cool while a fire alarm blared throughout the East Coast broadcast of his show, ‘NBC Nightly News.’

The mishap provided fodder for plenty of laughs on Wednesday night’s episode of ‘The Daily Show.’ Though Jon Stewart expressed admiration for Williams’ uncommon poise, he was more troubled by the anchor’s flagrant disregard for standard fire safety procedures: ‘Fire alarm goes off in your studio, and your advice is ‘Stay on prompter?’ ‘

Much to Stewart’s delight, Williams’ irritation with the persistent fire alarm did gradually bubble to the surface. First, he cracked what Stewart called the ‘I’m going to ... kill someone smile.’ Then, when it turned out the alarm still hadn’t been shut off after the show returned from commercial break, Williams looked visibly annoyed.

‘He’s not even pretending anymore,’ Stewart said, breaking into a fit of un-anchor-ly laughter.

Of course, he also worked in a dig about the infamously old network-news demographic.’You know who I feel bad for? The audience at home. That high-pitched incessant noise must have done terrible damage to their hearing aids.’

But it was Williams, in a surprise visit to the ‘Daily Show’ studio, who got the last laugh, interrupting Stewart’s fake news broadcast with a blaring bullhorn. ‘You trying to do a show, Jon? Not so funny is it, funny man?’
