HUMORIST: “Will Ferrell: The Mark Twain Prize” honors the comedian. With Jack Black, Matthew Broderick, Conan O’Brien, John C. Reilly, Andy Samberg and Ben Stiller at 10 p.m. on KOCE.


America in Primetime:  This new four-part series surveys current and past TV shows, focusing on character archetypes. Up first, the portrayal of “Independent Women” (5 and 9 p.m. KOCE).

Live From Daryl’s House:  The Plain White T’s perform in this new episode (11 p.m. KTLA).

Saturday Night Live:
 Charlie Day hosts with musical guest Maroon 5 (11:29 p.m. NBC).


East of Eden:
 James Dean stars in director Elia Kazan’s 1955 version of John Steinbeck’s novel as a young man who isn’t happy with his lot in life. (5 p.m. TCM).

Starship Troopers:
 Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer and Denise Richards star in this 1997 science fiction adventure about the struggle to save the Earth from an army of enormous killer bugs. Neil Patrick Harris also stars (6 p.m. Syfy).

Love’s Christmas Journey:
 Sean Astin and JoBeth Williams star in this new holiday tale inspired by the popular Janette Oke books (8 p.m. Hallmark).

The Wizard of Oz:
 Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Margaret Hamilton and Frank Morgan star in this 1939 classic adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s book (9:30 p.m. TBS).

Country Strong:
 Gwyneth Paltrow stars in this 2010 drama of a troubled country music star on the road to redemption after a stay in rehab. Tim McGraw, Leighton Meester and Garrett Hedlund also star (10:40 p.m. Starz).
