Is there life after ‘Oprah’?

The last episode of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ airs this week, and in Sunday’s Times, we looked back at Oprah’s Book Club with the help of authors Janet Fitch and James Frey (the latter of whom, after causing one of the show’s biggest uproars, returned to meet Winfrey last week).

The Book Club had an enormous effect on the book world -- ‘The Oprah Effect’ became a catchphrase in the publishing world as writers found a nod from Winfrey could catapult them from obscurity to bestseller lists. Winfrey’s not exactly sure what form, if any, her book club might take in future. She told USA Today vaguely, ‘I’m going to try to develop a show for books and authors’ for OWN, her recently launched television network.

Meanwhile, we will continue blogging Oprah’s last episodes until Wednesday afternoon, when ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ signs off.
