Looking forward to seeing Robbie Robertson. Tavis Smiley always provides an incisive and thoughtful interview. One of Robbie Robertson's talents lies in creating characters we seem to know but haven't met. It's not surprising that the meaning of "The Weight" remains cloudy. My Rockaeology blog at http://bit.ly/hArGWv examines the meaning of the song's lyrics. Robertson credits the films of French director Luis Buñuel as the inspiration for “The Weight"; films with religious connotations that don't necessarily have a religious meaning.
Robertson has said he did not intend the song to have a religious theme; his Nazareth is a small city in Pennsylvania where C.F. Martin guitars are manufactured. The characters -- Luke, Fanny, Crazy Chester and the rest -- are all people the group knew with stories of their own.
