Two classic ABC soap operas will soon meet their demise: "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" will air their final episodes in September 2011 and January 2012, respectively, leaving only "General Hospital" to survive them. No word yet on whether they'll rise from the dead, like "One Life to Live"'s Elijah Clarke, after being snuffed out.

Since it premiered in 1970, "All My Children" has received more than 30 Emmy Awards and made history by airing daytime TV's first same-sex kiss between two women as well as its first lesbian wedding and the first coming-out story for a transgender character.

The Emmy Award-winning "One Live to Live" has been on the air since 1968 and was among the first in daytime television to cover interracial romance, gang violence and teen pregnancy. The show made national headlines when it introduced a gay teen character (played by Ryan Phillippe) and was later honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

In place of the two soaps will be two new series, "The Chew," a food show co-hosted by Mario Batali set to premiere in September 2011, and "The Revolution" (working title), a makeover show hosted by Tim Gunn that focuses on "health and lifestyle transformations" that will make its debut in January 2012.

"While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can't help but recognize how bittersweet the change is," said Brian Frons, president of daytime for Disney ABC/Television Group, in a statement.

Noting that the two new series were inspired by the success of "The View," Frons said, "We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on 'real life' takeaways."

Soap opera watchers have to be the most vacuous, ignorant morons with nothing at all going for them, and no live to live. Ha, "Life to Live," would have been a good title for one of these empty programs with implausible plots and wretched acting. Maybe the fat, ugly housewives or loser singletons who watch will now have time to do something that actually matters -- like volunteering, getting a job, paying attention to their children or, gee, at least stop stuffing their fat faces while they gobble down pathetic made up pathos of made-up people.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Leave the soaps alone and get rid ofthe "reality shows"

i think its kind of sad that they are doing this. i grew up with these soaps. what is the big deal, who wants to watch a cooking show or a makeover show? you can see them on cable. give it a break.who really cares? i dont tape the shows anymore because i work but i watch them on soapnet. now what am i going to do??? i think its really really sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe if they had turned them into telenovellas instead they would have survived. You cannot ignore demographic shifts and expect to survive.

Bottom line: "One Life to Live" was not a well-written show, and the same unfortunately goes for "All my Children"; despite a few brave attempts attempts at gay-love stories and HIV tales, the lack of originality and recycled storylines that endlessly chirped 1950s/1960s values had no place in today's changing TV landscape. On top of that, AMC took a mortal wound when it fired Thorston Kaye (aka Zach Slater), so I can imagine how many viewers jumped ship when one of daytime TV's most popular soap couples bit the dust, and the loss of David Canary (Adam Chandler/Stuart Chandler) as well as the death of James Mitchell (Palmer Cortland) were two more lethal blows. I watch "General Hospital", but yes, I think it won't be long before that follows AMC and OLTL into the sunset. Which also means "ABC Soaps In Depth" will stop being published.

Unfortunately, a few posters here are correct. TV networks are business corporations, and in the business world it's all about money. Today's crippled economy makes scripted daytime dramas too expensive to make, so cheaper format shows are the way to go. And it involves other things as well, such as the Internet, today's women being far more educated and having more options than their soap-watching mothers and grandmothers did, and the fact that today's young people just aren't interested in soaps regardless of how many shirtless young studs appear on camera. Why watch such guys on TV when you can drool at them more readily on Facebook or see them completely nude on cable?

The sad truth is that it won't be long before all the remaining soaps will go the way of ATWT, GL, AMC, and OLTL, and there will only reality shows, cooking shows, make-over shows, and so on. And there's nothing anybody can do about this except turn off the TV and go do something else.

I haven't watched soaps for years, but I have to say that I find the cancellation of AMC baffling. I thought it was supposed to be a popular show.

And a show called "The Chew" is going to replace the 2 soaps? Is it April Fools Day? Oh, wait...it's not.

I have been watching AMC since it started! I have TIVO and in fact the only reason I keep it on ABC is because of AMC. I am a homemaker and this is a fun part of my day. You are making a huge mistake thinking that two talk shows will replace the clever plots of AMC and the personal interactions of the characters. The only reason The View is so successful is Barbara Walters and believe me, Tim Gunn is no Barbara Walters! but I'm sure he comes with a cheaper price tag than either Susan Lucci or Any of the ladies on the View. Keep on digging your own grave!

This just plain sucks...PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OFF MY ONLY FAVORITE SHOWS....No No No..:(

I just cannot believe this. What brain child thinks we need a food show on in the middle of the afternoon? If anybody wanted to watch food, there are plenty of other places to watch it. All My Children, and One Life to Live, are far more engaging than yet another boring reality show. This is a great way to treat the people like myself who can honestly say they have never missed one single show. The day those shows get cancelled I can assure you I, along with many others WILL NOT be watching your new programing. How absolutely ridiculous!!!!!!

If the studios would cut the actreses wardrobes they could save a lot of money. Don't have so many writers and staff. Everyone is so tired of watching ala Kane whine. get masrried and whine somemore. On the other hand, OLTL just got very interesting in their story lines. ABC is making a BIG MISTAKE in taking these shows off the air. We have ENOUGH food channels (and that stupid name alone will kill it) I for one WILL NOT be watching in the afternoon if they do this.

GIVE ME A BREAK. Another boring food show. I hope they both flop big time. Big mistake. Our entire college dorm watched both these soaps faithfully........

All my children is the reason I turn the TV on in the daytime... and watch other things from that show on into the evening...NO MORE!!! My TV will stay OFF! "The Chew" what a stupid name for an adult show - or maybe like the name implys it will just be a stupid show. I certainly won't be watching. With a name like that I'm not even curious.

You have to be kidding me!!!! What a joke those two shows will never make it! I stopped watching All My Children after they killed off Zack but OLTL is absolutely awesome right now. Who the hell wants to watch something called "the chew". I love ABC shows but this is insane. Get rid of some of those reality shows.

I can't believe that All My Children is being cancelled... I am really really upset I have been watching AMC from day one.. and to be replaced by two stupid shows is unacceptable.

I DON'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPING! I HAVE BEEN WATCHING OR RECORDING AMC SINCE THE BEGINNING. IF THEY ARE GOING TO GO THROUGH WITH THIS BIG MISTAKE I CAN PROMISE THAT I WON'T BE WATCHING ANYTHING THAT IS AIRED ON ABC.

I think ABC is one sorry bunch of cowards they denied they were going to cancel All my Children and One Life to Live . They made plenty of money over the years off these shows but now they want to dump the two soaps I say all of us fans should quit watching their shows to show them we dont want some cheap shows they want to shove down our throat. This country is going downhill because of the stupid reality shows you put on and degraded people. Digusted Fan .

The cancellation of AMC and OLTL is very disappointing. I grew up with AMC and started watching 40 years ago with my grandmother. I began watching OLTL when I was in high school and soaps were really popular. Both of those shows are better than GH. I believe this is a bad decision for the network. ABC, NBC, and CBS tv line-up has gone down hill for the last few years. Cable/satellite are not any better. I can tell you now, I will not watch a show call "The Chew." And here we go again with another show discussing several different topics. Don't we have enough of those already, The View, Rachel Ray, Nate Burkis, etc. Watching soaps is relaxing. Yes, sometimes the topics were out there, but other times they focused on real-life situations. For example, OLTL has a story line about bullying. Whether I had the opportunity to watch during the day or knew I could watch on SoapNet at night or in the morning, it was comforting to know those shows were there. I can't tell you how DONE I am with reality tv. Seriously, The Kardashians????? I find mysefl watching National Geographic and the Travel Channel more than anything (other than the two soaps.) How many CSI, medical, or court shows can you have?

I have been watching these program sine I was 13 now 49 yes thats 36 years.Does that tell you about mthe programs. We have enough food and how to make your self well.Give it a break I will not watch ABC if these programs are cancelled.

I can't believe that All my Children is being cancelled and replaced by what sounds like two stupid shows..
I am a very big fan of AMC and have been watching it from day one.
VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!
