ABC cancels 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live'

Two classic ABC soap operas will soon meet their demise: "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" will air their final episodes in September 2011 and January 2012, respectively, leaving only "General Hospital" to survive them. No word yet on whether they'll rise from the dead, like "One Life to Live"'s Elijah Clarke, after being snuffed out.

Since it premiered in 1970, "All My Children" has received more than 30 Emmy Awards and made history by airing daytime TV's first same-sex kiss between two women as well as its first lesbian wedding and the first coming-out story for a transgender character.

The Emmy Award-winning "One Live to Live" has been on the air since 1968 and was among the first in daytime television to cover interracial romance, gang violence and teen pregnancy. The show made national headlines when it introduced a gay teen character (played by Ryan Phillippe) and was later honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

In place of the two soaps will be two new series, "The Chew," a food show co-hosted by Mario Batali set to premiere in September 2011, and "The Revolution" (working title), a makeover show hosted by Tim Gunn that focuses on "health and lifestyle transformations" that will make its debut in January 2012.

"While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can't help but recognize how bittersweet the change is," said Brian Frons, president of daytime for Disney ABC/Television Group, in a statement.

Noting that the two new series were inspired by the success of "The View," Frons said, "We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on 'real life' takeaways."

PLEASE DON'T CANCEL "ALL MY CHILDREN!" My husband and I were married in 1970 when AMC debuted. He passed away in 2009, and if you cancel this show that I have also been "married" to for 41 years, I will have lost another "member of my family."
I am sure that millions of other people feel the same way. That's what the public needs is another food show to make them fatter than they already are! E.T. Alpert

I am such a fan of both AMC & OLTL and I tape everyday and enjoy watching after prime time. I have been a fan since the begining of both. I am oh so sad to see both of the only soaps I watch end. I think that the people who are in charge of this daytime programs should have his head examined.
And the fact that alot of the actors from AMC moved to LA and now NO JOB. That is really cra- -y. They will be oh so missed by myself and lots of others.
Please listen to all of the AMC & OLTL viewers and keep them on, ABC and others have enough Food and reality shows.
NO MORE ABC watching for me.

Wow...I can't believe they are taking off "All my Children" and "One life to live" I'm not interested in the "New" talk shows that will take their place. I hope the people that came up with that idea, they lose their job!

ABC fired all of their "older" award-winning writers (deemed to be unable to write to connect with their hoped-for younger audience).

How'd that work out for you, ABC?

Lost your audience? Lost the law suit?

Very, very sad that these classic soaps will be cancelled. And for what -- yet another cooking show??!! OMG please -- there are so many cooking shows on regular network TV and cable -- enough already!!!

And HELLO -- ABC you're already running a roundtable/makeover show at 11:00 -- The View!!

Big mistake ABC and Frons -- you deserve to choke and you will.

This is so sad. Erica Kane/ Susan Lucci are the best thing that happened to AMC. I have been watching this show since it began in 1970. What about the poor retirees who depend on these shows for entertainment. I believe that people still enjoy watching something entertaining and a story versus talk shows. There are plenty of talk shows, especially if you have cable. Hopefully some cable network will have the brains to pick up the two shows. I enjoy taping these shows and watching during the evening. I plan to boycott ABC. Please reconsider your decision.

i am so mad....take general hospital and leave one life to live....come on this is the stupidest thing...at least AMC and OLTL have more than one story line per episode....and all general hospital shows is brenda...enough with brenda we get it she is the best thing since sliced bread!!! hope ABC comes to their senses.

SHAME on you abc for STUPID decision making in canceling our soaps! I will join the ranks of MANY WHO WILL BOYCOTT EVERYTHING ABC broadcasts! Yet ANOTHER cooking show? Oh please! There are TWO (2) full time food stations on right now! You can't PAY ME to watch Mario's cooking ... it's sloppy and non-appealing! ANOTHER talk & issues show? O PLEASE! I watch old reruns on tvland as it is to avoid the nonsense of drama, celebrity meltdowns, baby-daddy's and screwed up perverts. ABC... I'm done with you if you cancel these shows! Local AND nationally! And I will be writing your sponsors to let them know that I will be cancelling my money spending habits on their products. You think everything can be replaced? You're right! AND JUST WATCH IT HAPPEN TO ABC AND THEIR SPONSORS!

After Brian Frons is fired I'll celebrate because of his foolish mistake in getting rid of my favorite programs.. No one will be watching the replacements.. I won't tune into ABC... Every single show I've grown attached to have been canceled by the network. Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, and FlashFoward gone... AMC and OLTL gone and so is Bucci from ABC.... lol

I have been watching AMC since it first aired. I feel like Erica is my sister and we've grown up together. It's ridiculous that they are even entertaining the thought to cancel AMC or OLTL. I hope this is just a bad rumor. If they do cancel the shows, shame on the powers that be.

what a stupid decion.. really.. these soaps have been out since my great grandma... and i have been watching them every day sincei have been well eever since i have been born... screw new shows.. do u wanna know how many ppl count on watching those 2 sopas... big mistake.. screw the new shows im all set.. ill find somthing else to watch!!!!

since brian frons only understands numbers - let's show him some. right now, stop watching ALL ABC shows

Really how stupid can one network be.. I think the network just made a fatal mistake. Maybe they should have fired the idiots who made this decision. As of tomorrow I will start recording the soaps on NBC and CBS. I for one will not be watching the silly replacement shows or much of anything on ABC.

My wife has followed AMC since debut, PLEASE DON'T CANCEL, it provides an hour of peace and quiet

It's all about money folks.
Soap operas do not typically do much in the way of reruns
and the number of performers, writers, etc are much higher than they
will be for the new shows as well as likely having a much lower cost/salary
level or perhaps a higher ownership by whoever is calling the shots.

Both of the new shows will be able to be put into syndication if they have
any real level of success.

So, can you save your favorite shows?
Maybe, but I some how doubt there are enough fanatics to pull it off.
Your best bet is to try and get another channel to adopt your newly
orphaned show. Demonstrate that you can generate enough of the
right demographics watching the shows and commercials and it can

Good luck.

I am outraged that you would cancel ALL MY CHILDREN !!! I watch ABC almost exclusively from Good Morning America, AMC, the Doctors, Dancing With The Stars, Greys Anatomy, and furious that you would do this. These soaps, not only provide an hour of fantasy, but also have been a huge spring board for so many actors ! IF you can withstand the pressure of the soaps, maybe you can make it!
The actors on AMC are wonderful and seasoned!
The food Network has plenty of cooking shows! You are making a big

Wow. I'm not a soaps person, but I remember watching them out of the corner of my eye when volunteering at a hospital, and I saw how they meant so much to so many people.

Food shows and reality TV may be cheap to produce, but who's going to watch one more of each? All the same. I feel for all those who really DID love these shows.

Glad I get my entertainment online, instead. ABC, you're dumb. This is not going to attract a new audience for you, just drive away loyal fans.

now maybe daytime television will be less depressing.

What? This is so crazy! I've been watching All MY Children for over 30 years!
One Live to Life is one of Top Soap opera around!! Don't we have a vote on this?
How can we stop this from happening? Sounds like a lot of frustrated soap fans!
I know I'm not watching the new shows that's taking their places! I'll probably stop watching ABC all together if this happens! Anyone with me? It's time to for us to fight back!!!

I love all my children ,one life to live, and general hospital this is terrible i have watched these shows sents i was a child with my grandmother . Even days of are lives and young and the restless ,i have my DVR programed to watch all five. this is not right these 5 shows are part of a lot of peoples TV watching during the day ,please don't take them off and put those other stupid shows on. ABC is ratings will go down because a lot of people will watch NBC, and other channels. I know i wont have my DVR programed for any thing except days of are lives , young and the restless and maybe general hospital. please don't do this!!!!!!!!!
