Katie Couric’s future career path is the subject of nearly as much speculation as Charlie Sheen’s these days. But David Letterman is urging the CBS anchor to stay at the network where they both work.

On Tuesday’s ‘Late Show,’ Couric said her contract for ‘CBS Evening News’ — where she has been the anchor for five years — is up in June. She is reportedly mulling options, including a syndicated daily talk show.

‘You can’t leave the network, can you?’ Letterman asked, as Couric looked surprised and then laughed nervously. ‘I’m figuring out what I wanna do,’ she replied.

The exchange began to get uncomfortable when Letterman persisted: ‘Let me tell you something: When you take the anchor chair, that’s what you do.’

‘Really?’ Couric said. ‘Is that a CBS law?’

Letterman chided that network anchor is ‘not a temp gig.’

Show Trackers, what did you think of the exchange? Should Letterman have backed off or was he right to press Couric?
