'The Vampire Diaries': Executive producer Julie Plec teases a return, Klaus' debut

Trevor There's a silver lining to death on the CW's “The Vampire Diaries.” A stake to the heart or a brutal neck snap doesn't mean viewers will never see a beloved character again. And in the case of Rose's (Lauren Cohan) platonic companion Trevor (Trent Ford), even a beheading by Elijah (Daniel Gillies) won't keep him away.

“We will be seeing Trevor again this year,” executive producer Julie Plec revealed to Show Tracker during an interview. But even “Vampire Diaries” can't perform miracles, so the character won't be coming back from the dead. Instead, the return appearance will come during a format that fans of the show know all too well for period garb and revealing truths. Yes, another flashback episode is on its way!

“It's Episode 19, which is the first time we meet Klaus,” explained Plec. “We're also going back into the past.”

The episode, airing April 21, will mark Joseph Morgan's debut as the mysterious Original vampire. Fans of the show had plenty of picks for who should play Klaus -– Joshua Jackson! Jason Dohring! Taylor Kitsch! Gale Harold! -– but Plec is confident in their choice of the former “Hex” star.

Morgan “can handle the weight and the gravitas that Klaus needs, but he's also got these dimples and this grin and this sparkle in his eyes,” she said. “You always need your villains to have multiple layers and to be able to kill you with kindness as much as they can kill you with violence. I think Joseph really represents that.” She adds that casting someone relatively unknown to American viewers gives the producers some exciting advantages. “We've been talking about [Klaus] for 15 episodes, so we really wanted to make it feel like it was something new for the audience.”

It also doesn't hurt that Morgan is British. “The more of the Brits that we saw [during the audition process], the more we realized that the American actors were operating at a handicap, unfortunately for them. There's just something so charming and worldly and sexy and dangerous about an Englishman,” she laughed. And in the end, it makes sense for an Original to be European. “As we've seen with Elijah, with his accent that shall not be named ... it's old world vs. new world. The old world goes back a lot older once you cross the Atlantic.”

Showtrackers, what are you most excited about: Trevor's return, another flashback episode or the debut of Klaus? And stayed tuned to Show Tracker for much more from our chat with Plec!

All of the above! Cant wait for the shows return. This is truly the best show out there right now. No other show can provide the multiple, staggering twists and turns, character development not just for 1 or 2, but half a dozen amazing actors, great music, humor, drama, hotness.. Yup...A++ in my book.

Bad enough that the networks have to keep hiring foreign actors (who work cheaper) for American series leads without producers like Plec insulting all American actors into the bargain. Plec's suggestion that an American actor couldn't be found to equal Mr. Morgan, and that their American nationality was an underlying reason for that, is offensive and quite wrong. Where is Plec herself from? If she's an American, maybe she herself should be replaced with somebody from the BBC, since she thinks Americans are so hapless. A dose of her own medicine surely couldn't put her out, and I'm sure a British producer would work cheaper. As she herself points out, they obviously understand more about getting vampire fiction right. Then again if she ISN'T American, her antipathy towards American actors has no place on an American network. Either way, I say rid of HER.

I can't wait to see Klaus! I love villains! I hope he's in season 3 too! The guy they picked to play him is such a cutie! Too bad he can kill you in under 2 seconds. But hey, no one is perfect.

Ok, people chill out. It's just a television show. Kevin and Julie probably just thought that a British actor fit the role better than an American. It doesn't mean that American actors aren't talented

@jh - You're kidding, right? If you actually read the quote and absorb the context, Plec is referring to what made an actor suitable for that particular character (you know, the one she had a hand creating in HER show), and then proceeds to qualify that with the "Old World" feel a European actor could bring. Second, Mr. Morgan is a guest star, not a lead, but so what if he was? Third, most of the principal cast is American. Please try not to hurt yourself while grinding that axe.

i cant wait to see what klaus looks like... what are the brothers up to.

Love the interview! How fun that we get to see Trevor again! I found him quite entertaining.

@jh I think Julie's point was actually a little joke about how so many of us swoon for an accent. It's a crush factor not a all the other actors suck factor. Klaus also isn't a lead. He's a Big Bad. You really need to check your attitude.

love the show , is one of my favorites. but what is with all these long one month breaks between episodes. its hurting the show by taking so much time off between episodes.

I can't wait for this show to come back. I'm a little scared about the last 6 episodes. The Vampire Diaries definitely knows how to get your blood pumping. All of the little tidbits from the cast and crew on twitter has made the hiatus bearable. I'm really excited to see Klaus in action. Will he be able to live up to the pure awesome of Elijah? I hope so. This show surprises me in the most wonderful ways. Thanks for the great interview with Julie.

@JH I think you are on the wrong website. This isn't FoxNews.com

jh, I'm pretty sure what Julie was saying had very little to do with foreign actors working for less pay and everything to do with the fact that the character of Klaus is probably supposed to be a few thousand years old. Dude's not gonna have an American accent. If the producers would like a character who is clearly not American and comes from a time and place that far pre-dates the United States, why hire an American actor to fake an accent. That seems silly, doesn't it?

I'm excited about it all knowing that Klaus was coming a flashback was expected. I can't wait! But I must say having seen the cast's tweets that I'm scared to have Klaus anywhere near Elena, her family, friends, Damon & Stefan. Klaus had two scenes with Damon so far, and a single scene with Stefan & Elena.

I'm scared. According to Kevin & Julie not all of them will be standing by the end of this season. Not something I'm looking forward to.

i wouldnt mind Taylor Kitsch playing Klaus

So, when is Tyler gonna come back ?

I cannot wait to see Klaus! He is going to turn Mystic Falls upside down!

Haha! I knew it would be a flashback episode! It would be too early for Klaus to show up in Mystic Falls. I'm so excited to know what Klaus would look like (I mean the appearance they'll be putting on Joseph). And oh, if we would see Trevor, would be see Rose again? I love her, and I would love to see in her long hair again.

The depth of the characters on TVD, "villan" or "hero" is one of the things that make it so special. Cannot wait to meet Klaus! April 7th April 7th *chants*

PLEASE DONT KILL KLAUS OFF BEFORE THE SEASON ENDS or AFTER THE SEASON ENDS!!!!!!!! Let him stick around to the very end of the series if you must, but you cant kill of the most powerful, oldest, original, badass, charming, charismatic, dangerous, psychotic, vampire out there before the seasons over or during the last episode!!! I mean right now its like Operation:Kill Klaus, and how do we not know he just isnt going to come and make a deal with Elena. He feed her vamp blood, sacrifice her, she comes back as a vamp and can be with Stefan and Damon forever, break the curse, kill Katherine and Elijah, and leave town never to return? Im telling ya, Klaus is going to be seriously pissed off when he finds out everyone in this small ass town is planning to kill him, especially if he has the deal of a lifetime

If Klaus dies in the season finale, I will suffer a massive heart attack. You can't kill off the TVD equivalent of Dracula in 4 episodes! It takes an entire season of getting your ass kicked in order to finally defeat Klaus! And I'm also relieved to hear that Kevin and Julie based their casting decision based on talent, depth and charisma as opposed to just a famous face. Hee! I'm so giddy right now! My face hurts from smiling so much!

Joseph Morgan was the perfect casting for this role. Take a look at this vid:
Not only is he smokin hot, with an incredible accent that makes him so classy, but the man is hilarious! If you don't follow him @_josephmorgan and Daniel Gillies (aka Elijah aka @mrholymonster) on Twitter, you are missing out! They had a twitter banter back and forth tonight that was epic. Soooo funny! Want them both to stay on TVD forever! (I can hope.) :)
PS - while you're at it, be sure to follow Matt Davis (aka Alaric aka @ErnestoRiley) on Twitter as well! Simply the best!

Does he make the debut in the flashback or in the modern world for episode 19? I'm leaning towards the flashback with the evil cliffie being Klaus arriving in Mystic Falls at the end, but I'm not sure. Anybody with an answer?
