‘Shameless’ acquitted itself honorably in its Sunday season finale. Showtime’s dark family series starring William H. Macy delivered 1.2 million total viewers, according to the Nielsen Co.

That’s Showtime’s biggest Season 1 closer since ‘Queer as Folk’ in 2001. The 10 p.m. finale also marked the best-ever numbers for ‘Shameless,’ which premiered to 982,000 viewers.

‘Shameless’ is now Showtime’s No. 3 series, behind ‘Dexter’ and ‘Weeds.’

Meanwhile, the Season 4 finale of ‘Californication’ at 9 p.m. drew 547,000 viewers. The dark comedy starring David Duchovny as an oversexed writer was down 7% for the season, but last year it was paired with ‘Dexter,’ the cable outlet’s No. 1 show.

Show Trackers, what do you think of Macy and ‘Shameless’?
