PETA to protest Mike Tyson's new pigeon show [Updated]

Mikepigeon "Taking on Tyson," Mike Tyson's new series featuring his entry into competitive pigeon racing, received some favorable reviews, but an animal rights group is not flying high over the Animal Planet project.

Members of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are planning to protest outside Tyson's gated Nevada community in Henderson. [Updated 12:35 p.m.: An earlier version of this article said Henderson is in New Jersey.]

"If Mike Tyson truly loved birds, he would fight for their protection -- not force them into a 'race' that tears them away from their families and subjects them to injuries, exhaustion and death," PETA Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement.

In the series, Tyson, who has a lifelong affection and connection to pigeons, puts together a team of veterans to compete in pigeon racing.

Animal Planet had no immediate response to the protest.

Some people who race pigeons aren't so good about their care. If one of their birds gets lost and is found and returned, they will sometimes kill the bird as "defective: and this is wrong.

I have heard that Mike Tyson is very loving of his pigeons, so I have less of a problem with this. PETA does excellent undercover exposes of some very bad animnal conditions, but I do wish they would pick their battles more carefully. I also wish that Mike Tyson would would use his position and interest in pigeon racing to speak out in defense of pigeons who get an unfair and bad rap as "rats with wings" - a 30-year-old statement from a Woody Allen movie that has nothing to do with reality (a man, by the way, who slept with his own stepdaughter, so who is he to talk about pigeons?). Pigeons are highly intelligent birds with amazing navigational strengths. They can comprehend letters of the alphabet and are one of only 2 other species that can recognize itself in a mirror. They are devoted mates, exemplary parents and are not dirty or disease-ridden as is commonly thought simply because their gray color makes them appear dirty. A study proved they are no different than a robin or blue jay or any other bird in carrying disease. They simply have learned to live closely with man - a species that fouls its own nest better than any other creature on the planet.

I FLEW PIGEONS FOR 15 YEARS AND LET ME SAY THIS. IT IS THE FARTHEST FROM ABUSING AN ANIMAL THESE PEOPLE TAKE GREAT CARE AND SPEND BIG BUCKS TO MAINTAIN THE PIGEONS WELFARE.THERE IS ALSO THE TIME AND PATIENCE THAT IS PUT INTO IT. TO PROTEST MR. TYSON IS JUSY PLAIN SILLY. IF MIKE NEEDS A LOFT MANAGER I AM GAME WE WILL WIN!!!!

I'm a vegan and a longtime supporter of the Human Society and ASPCA and all I can say is that PETA makes the rest of us look utterly foolish. Tearing pigeons away from their families? Isn't that what we do when we adopt kittens? Sheesh.

If PETA really cared about animals, and less about getting attention, they would stop protesting so many varied activities and focus on real crimes against animals.

Greeting. I spent more than five hours today feeding city Pigeons with wild bird seeds and baked goods. Many people do not even realize that city hatched Pigeons and other birds do not easily find proper food from the trees and the ground and suffer and die early in their lives. So it is right for us human beings to love, care and regularly attend to the care of birds and animals but to hold them in captivity for our own pleasures is not approved by the Christian Vegan Lord, Jesus. We have to seek freedom, comfort and healing for all animals and human beings, for the fear of the Holy Creator. I hope and pray that Mr Tyson's interest in the birds is also healthy and brings them happiness but not additional stress, which they do not need. The Christian Vegan way prohibits animal caging, domesticating, taming and forcing them to obey human beings instead of the living God. Sick animals and human beings should also seek Christian Science treatment which comes with Nursing facilities. Some terminally sick animals were cured instead of being put down violently. So let us hope for the best, for the suffering animals and give them all our love and respect, in Christ. Please read: The Lord Christ Jesus Was a Vegan & The Christian Vegan Revised Psalms by Saba. All animal right activists must be Christian Vegans and obey the commandments of the Good Lord to be justified of sin and to be able serve God effectively, with purified motive.

God be our King forever. Amen.

I AGREE: "If Mike Tyson truly loved birds, he would fight for their protection -- not force them into a 'race' that tears them away from their families and subjects them to injuries, exhaustion and death," PETA Vice President Lisa Lange said in a statement.

I believe in animal rights, but PETA take their activism too far and their arguments can come off as ridiculous. Leave Mike Tyson and his birds alone!

PETA are worthless. I call them the Petaban (like Taliban) They were outside a McDonalds recently protesting something and I decided to have a little fun. I went into a nearby shop and asked if they had a piece of cardboard and pen. They gave me one and I wrote "People Eating Tasty Animals" on it. The shop keeper giggled and I walked by them holding the sign as I went into the joint. One of them said "we can sue you for slandering our organization, but I ignored them. What fun.

Kudos to Mike Tyson who is doing something wonderful with this television series; he is bringing learning and awareness to a hobby and sport that does not otherwise get much press. These star pigeon athletes have a great life compared to the less fortunate and unprotected city pigeon. Sure, some do not make it home, but most do, and unlike horses they are not raced in inclement conditions giving them every advantage.

Our relationship to these beautiful birds is ancient--from the pharaohs, to Reuters News Service, to racing origins in Belgium, to the incredible decorated war hero pigeons. The finest racing pigeons were donated in WWI & II. Miraculously, they could home to mobile lofts and helped save many lives.

If PETA were smart they would see the promotion of caring and husbandry involved here. Instead they are camped out in the celebrity spotlight. –How about bring some focus to the horrific pigeon shoots still legal in PA! PETA is truly a low life loser organization that has lost all credibility.

you go mike with thoses pigeons and win.. peta and stupid peole that think theses birds dont love flying should do some research.. they flew in the war gi joe so dont let peta control anything you or any of us do with the birds we love so much good luck
