HBO's 'Mildred Pierce' with Kate Winslet opens to disappointing ratings

Katewinslet HBO had Oscar winner Kate Winslet and some good reviews, but that wasn't enough to turn "Mildred Pierce" into a ratings star.

Sunday's premiere of the miniseries -- based on James M. Cain's 1941 novel about the travails of a Depression-era housewife -- delivered just 1.3 million total viewers, according to the Nielsen Co.

That was on the low end for a HBO miniseries. The historical drama "John Adams" premiered to 2.5 million viewers back in 2008. "Mildred Pierce" was on par with "Generation Kill," the 2008 miniseries about the Iraq war, which featured no big-name stars.

Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce is my favorite movie, especially set in the 1940's. I watched Kate Winslet in the 1930's Mildred Pierce. The 1930's is not my favorite period as far as costumes go. The homemade pies and cakes
brought back memories of how to bake from scratch. The movie moved way too slow for me. I thought "Mildred" was way to frumpy throughout the entire movie. I kept waiting for her to have some confidence, stand up straight and quit whining, but she whined through the whole movie. Her wigs were all alike,
ugly! There were some twists and turns to make it interesting, but I wouldn't watch it again.
