March 30, 2011 |  5:56 pm

Gab HBO has pulled the plug on "In Treatment," the critically acclaimed series starring Gabriel Byrne as a psychiatrist who treats patients in his home office. The drama completed its third season last year.

Though the series, based on an Israeli format, was praised by critics and scored a Golden Globe for Byrne, it was never a big hit with viewers.

Among the stars that appeared on the series were Debra Winger, Blair Underwood and Dianne Wiest. It also marked the first major role for young actress Mia Wasikowska, who went on to star in Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" and "Jane Eyre."

[Updated at 10:18 a.m.] HBO may have to go into treatment for seperation anxiety when it comes to "In Treatment." According to a new statement by the network: "It's true that we have no plans to continue with 'In Treatment' as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories."
