About (Late) Last Night: Ashton Kutcher, Jimmy Fallon fight a water war [video]
On Thursday night, Ashton Kutcher stopped by “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” to plug his raunchy new romantic comedy, “No Strings Attached.” He sat for the obligatory anecdote-filled interview with Fallon, but the real laughs came in another segment: “Water War.” It’s Friday, the week is almost over, and in that spirit, I bring you this splendidly silly late-night moment.
In what played like a goofy, nonlethal spoof of the Russian roulette scene in “The Deer Hunter,” Fallon and Kutcher went head-to-head in a game of “War,” the low-skill card game beloved by second-graders everywhere. Only in their version, the loser of each round would be doused with a glass of water. The first player to empty all five glasses of water on his opponent would win. The prize? Dousing the loser with an enormous water cannon.
“There are lots of ways to get wet, but only one way to win,” Fallon declared. Never one who’s been capable of maintaining a poker face, he giggled and added, “That’s my catchphrase.”
But Kutcher would not be cowed. “I must warn you, I'm exceptional at war,” he said.
And so the duel began. Immediately, Kutcher took the lead, one that his amiable foe could not quite surmount. Maybe Fallon was intimidated by Kutcher’s guttural Japanese gibberish; throughout the segment, he shouted like a character in a Kurosawa film. Or maybe some “Late Night” prop hands have a vendetta against their boss and stacked the decks in Kutcher’s favor. Whatever the case may be, it was Fallon who wound up on the wrong end of the water cannon. Once again, Kutcher got to be the punker, not the punkee.
