The Abyss: Unearthly phenomena complicate a deep-sea search for a missing nuclear sub in director James Cameron’s visually striking 1989 sci-fi adventure. Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn star (6 p.m. AMC).

Scrooge: Albert Finney stars in this 1970 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” (6:30 p.m. TCM).

Public Enemies: Depression-era gangster John Dillinger lives again, through Johnny Depp, in writer-director Michael Mann’s (“Heat”) drama about the then-fledgling FBI’s campaign to establish itself by targeting the top criminals of the time. Christian Bale also stars as federal agent Melvin Purvis, dispatched by J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) to catch Dillinger (8 p.m. HBO).
