'Dancing With the Stars' results recap: The final cut

122653_0372_pre Doggone it, the results sure have been surprising this season. When Season 11 started so many weeks ago, who would have thought that Jennifer Grey, Kyle Massey and Bristol Palin would be the last stars standing in this competition?

Bristol “the Pistol” Palin, ladies and gentlemen! Make no mistake about it: This teen activist cannot — nay, will not — be ignored. Nor will she step down from the ballroom fandango! With guylinered Mark Ballas by her side, Bristol has weathered the myriad “Dancing With the Stars” storms thrown her way and made it through to the final round.

Which meant, alas, that singer Brandy and her pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, were out in this ninth week of competition. Brandy, who just moments earlier in a segment, said ardently (maybe desperately), “I have to go to the finals. In the most humblest way, that’s where I feel we belong.”

It was clear that Brandy was not ready to leave. She wanted to be in the finals. No, she needed to be in the finals, and the tears of frustration and disappointment were evident at the end of the program. Good on Maks for being loving and supportive and positive about the show and his partner. “People vote, and their voices count, and I love that the show represents that,” the hunky Ukrainian said. “I don’t regret a second about being on this season.”

Oh, Brandy. Had this been another season no doubt your scores and dancing ability would have gotten you through to that final week. But this, clearly, is no ordinary season. How else to explain the strident staying power of the Pistol? At this rate, should we call the competition now? Because the way the votes have been going down week after week, Bristol Palin is primed and ready to win it all.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Let’s look back to the ousted singer’s happier moments, shall we? Like the encore dance, Brandy and Maks’ perfect-30 sultry Argentine tango, which Len said, “absolutely lit up the ballroom last night.” The routine was replete with lamppost and café table and chair from the night before, but the pluming smoke machine was noticeably absent (perhaps it had Tuesdays off?).

Then there was a segment where the final contestants looked back and in retrospect talked about their hardships and rewards of being on the show. Bristol found a confidence she didn’t know she had. Kyle learned to find discipline and push through the mental blocks. Brandy said it was rewarding, humbling and frustrating, all at the same time. Jennifer learned that once she accepted her physical limitations that she could go that much farther.

Lovely Annie Lennox performed two numbers. The first was “Universal Child” from her just-released album “A Christmas Cornucopia,” accompanied by two contemporary dancers – the first of whom unrolled onto the floor in a sheath of red fabric. You could tell Annie’s a friend of “DWTS” and of the arts, because she allowed the dancers to perform throughout the entire number. The second was a fun rendition of “Little Bird,” flanked by four fledgling dancers.

After weeks and weeks of voting, the Macy’s Design a Dance finally came to fruition. Derek Hough and Cheryl Burke were chosen to do a high-octane jive to Billy Joel’s “Still Rock 'n'Roll to Me,” and made fun use of a bright red convertible with the license plate “DWTS 11” as they reenacted a date at a drive-in movie theater.

Latin pop crooner Enrique Iglesias brought the entire crowd to their feet — judges included — and turned the Rectagon into fiesta central for his hit “I Like It.” And he was accompanied by our pros Dmitry Chaplin, Louis Van Amstel, Damian Whitewood, Kym Johnson, Cheryl Burke and Peta Murgatroyd, who’s making a good play to become a regular next season.

The party atmosphere, however, was abruptly brought to an end when Brandy was called out of the competition.

What do you think, ballroom fans? Do you like how this season has shaped up? Are you excited to see the remaining dancers’ freestyle routines? Will Brandy actually perform her freestyle next Tuesday, like Bruno had requested? Can anyone stop the Bristol train from barreling its way all the way to the coveted Mirrorball station?

The results are surprising? LOL you must not be very politically informed.

I don't watch this crappy right wing lame show but it is a FACT that Sarah Palin's people have been all over the internet arranging groups to vote and bombard the show so Bristol can win. They are all over twitter, all over every freaking right wing chat site that's out there.

These aren't Bristol's fans.. these are Sarah's people keeping her in this.

I find it all pathetic and funny. the show like another xtian right wing show, American Idol.. they've both jumped the shark.

Let's get back to intelligent tv and lose these crappy shows.

Jennifer Gray and partner will win and Bristol and Mark will be in 2nd place. Final. Bristol has blossomed and Jennifer has performed amazingly and deserves to win. "Can't no one put Baby in a corner"....she has proven the truth of those words.

Whatever happened to unbiased professional journalism? We can all think for ourselves, Allyssa. We may share opinions, but who wants to hear the constant whining from writers who have become NOISY arm chair quarterbacks and
simple angry opinion column writers?

WHERE IS the JOURNALISM in your article? It is disgusting. Is it any wonder why the majority of the population stopped reading and listening to you long ago? Perhaps some refresher courses would help you.

When you are tempted to yell your opinions at us remember this: Silence is golden....

Such sad news to see Brandy and Maks go! They were a great duo and I give them a lot of credit for getting this far. As far as Brisol goes, I could say I'm speechless but I'm not. It is very evident that she is where she is because of her mother and state behind her. Don't get me wrong she has transformed and come out of her shell and good for her, however, Brandy and Maks were by far superior dancers. It is a shame to see them go. They were one of the duos that I looked forward to dancing every week. Bristol made a comment on the show that people are relating to her because she is an everyday girl that had no dance experience which is true... to some extent. People know talent. Hopefully the votes will reflect the talent next week and not mirror a popularity contest. I'm sorry if I sound mean I just could see the major difference in dance styles. Nonetheless, Bristol has come a long way. Good job and "keep on keeping on" to all the contestants!

This season is like a comedy contest.

If this is going to be the way my favorite show is going to go then I don't want to watch any more. Having the daughter of a politician in the finals because supporters of her mother are making some kind of statement has now ruined this show for me. When someone comes on the show with their whole "star" factor being that their mother is a controversial politician, then it does not matter what any of the other contestants do. Politics is now ruining a really fun show that actually always ended up having the best dancers get to the finals. Now it is just a joke. If this keeps up, this is the beginning of the end of the show.

The ONLY reason Bristol is still there is due to viewers votes. SHE CANNOT DANCE and DEFINITELY doesn't deserve to be in the finals. This season's voting results had nothing to do with talent or skill because if it did Bristol should have been voted off the 1st week! It's a popularity contest that has gone HORRIBLY wrong at other peoples expense. I and like many others who see this show for what it REALLY is(A FRAUD & DISGRACE) will not be watching anymore this season or ever for that matter.

I’m a Moderate and NOT a S.Palin supporter. I had never once watched Dancing With the Stars, however I thought it would be a scream to watch what this poor girl would do. She should have been voted off a while back. Still I kept watching because in consideration of what Bristol Palin has been through: shoved into the public eye, judgment by other Christians of becoming pregnant out of wedlock, made fun of for her abstinence campaign, and then dealing with the ex-creep, I began to root for this small fry. I actually started voting. HA! And then OMG did she blossom! It’s like she ‘grew up and danced’- literally and metaphorically speaking. It is emotionally endearing that America chose the underdog. So did I… until tonight. "No" vote. She won the hearts of many in this endeavor including me. She’ll win a million more if she does the right thing and bows out. She’s proved herself a winner to all of us who thought she couldn’t do it, and more importantly, she’s proved it to herself. She should finalize it by bowing out.

great and balanced article. brandy's obsession to win was a bit of a turn off. THe other contestants seemed like they were there to have fun. I picked against brandy for that reason alone. Everyone else seemed like good sports. I wanted brandy off 3 or 4 weeks ago.

I think people are not getting it, REALLY? BRISTOL, REALLY? Please people, vote next week and get real!

This has been the most outrageous DWTS seaaon, first Rick Fox,now Brandy, what's really up with this show some of the best dancers got booted off, this will definitely be my last season watching because it has gotten to be a waste of my time, this show is showing it's political poster instead of clearly keeping those people on the show that deserve to be there.Bristrol Palin, really!!!!

If Bristol wins next week(please NO) then we'll know the voting process is as crooked as the results of the 2000 election(remember Florida's hanging, dimpled & PREGNANT chads?)Never underestimate the power of Mama Grizzley and her party of TEA-Baggers! Go Jennifer and Derek!

Well, I personally love Jennifer Grey but got to admit that I am rooting for Bristol Palin the All American Girl next door to win the entire thing! Yes, we love you Bristol and the haters need to just stop hating you. We are going to keep voting for you because we love Bristol "The Pistol" Palin!

i dont watch the show but no i do not like how it is ending up. everyone i know that watches the show is quite disgusted with how Bristol is somehow still on the show. Because her mother's influence. I think using politics in this competition is BS.

I dont have a problem with Bristol, just not how she is being kept on the show while others that deserved to be there have been ousted to keep her popularity and her mother in the spotlight.

This is probably the only thing she would win in her entire life...

I cant believe that Brandy got sent home she deserved to stay this season is not a fair one

Apparently many Americans prefer mediocrity. Thanks Tea Party!

Apparently many Americans prefer mediocrity. Thanks Tea Party!

I won't be tuning in next week due to the disturbing nature of this show. Brandy has out performed Bristol, yet, she is done. So heartbreaking for her. Its sort of sad for Bristol, too...it really doesn't seem like wants it that bad and, it has to be hard seeing the reaction to randy being voted off. ugh!

This is a real shame this wonderful show has turned into a political thing. It's so obvious what's happening. Give Bristol credit for trying so hard.. it's a rough game, but there are so many really GOOD dancers that have been voted out. Voting should NOT be in the hands of the public.. too many 'it's only the win that counts' out there.. not the reasonability and responsibility of what's right!
