'How to Train Your Dragon' to become weekly Cartoon Network series
Kids (and parents), get ready for more lessons in how to train that pesky dragon.
DreamWorks' critically acclaimed box-office hit “How To Train Your Dragon” will be coming to Cartoon Network as a weekly series in 2012, the network announced Tuesday.
“ 'The How To Train Your Dragon' weekly series definitely falls into that category of giving our viewers around the globe something they can’t find anywhere else on television and DreamWorks Animation is a proven leader in taking this art form to the next level,” said Stuart Snyder, president and chief operating officer of Turner’s Animation, Young Adults an Kids Business, in a statement.
The news comes on the heels of DreamWorks announcement earlier this week that the company has started production on “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”
The epic CGI-animated film, based on the book by Cressida Cowell, about a young Viking who sparks an unlikely friendship with an unruly dragon, has banked nearly $500 million worldwide since its theatrical release in the spring.
The DreamWorks picture featured characters voiced by Gerard Butler, Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera.
“How To Train Your Dragon has already captured the hearts and minds of audiences around the world and we are thrilled to join together with Cartoon Network to expand on this amazing movie in a television series of its own,” said Ann Daly, chief operating officer of DreamWorks Animation, in a statment.
[Update 1:49 p.m.: An earlier version of this post mistakenly said Cartoon Network was currently airing another DreamWorks-adapted series, "Penguins of Madagascar." That series airs on Nickelodeon.]

This should come as no surprise with the huge success of the How To Train Your Dragon movie. It will be interesting to see if as many viewers will enjoy it knowing that the production quality cannot match that of the film. Great movie.
