Elijah Wood lands his first TV role on FX

Wilfred 1
FX is deepening its comedy roster with "Wilfred," a new single-camera comedy starring Elijah Wood ("The Lord of the Rings" triology) and Jason Gann ("The Wedding").

Based on the Australian series of the same title, the new FX show was written by David Zuckerman ("Family Guy" and "American Dad,)" who will be its show runner and executive producer.

In his first TV role, Wood plays Ryan, an introvert who struggles to find social and professional happiness, until he meets Wilfred, who is played by Gann). Wilfred, according to a news release, is described as "part Australian Shepherd, part Russell Crowe on a bender. The world sees Wilfred as a dog; Ryan sees Wilfred as a man dressed in a dog suit. Wilfred is Ryan’s alter-ego intent on pushing Ryan out of his shell."

Fiona Gublemann ("Californication") co-stars as Ryan’s next-door neighbor and owner of Wilfred. Gann co-created and played the title character in the Australian version of "Wilfred."

"Wilfred" is the fourth new comedy added to the FX lineup in the last 18 months. The 13-episode series will premiere in summer 2011.

I absolutely love the Aussie version. Sadly, not availalbe on DVD in the US (for shame.) But does repeat on IFC on Wednesdays. Set your DVR or Tivo. A few epi's are available on Youtube.

I just hope they don't screw it up like they did "Kath and Kim." It sounds like they already have. In the Oz series, Wilfred is owned by Mark's new girlfriend, not a neighbor. I fear without the 3 of them in the same house, it will throw off the dynamics. And the way it's filmed is part of the sucess of the show.
