The Middle: The comedy returns for a new season (8 p.m. ABC).

Hell's Kitchen: Chef Gordon Ramsay welcomes 16 new contestants — one of whom is rushed to the emergency room — in the season premiere (8 p.m. Fox).

Better With You: This new comedy follows three couples at various stages of their relationships (8:30 p.m. ABC).

Criminal Minds: Tim Curry returns as a chilling serial killer in the season premiere (9 p.m. CBS).

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: A new season opens with a two-hour episode, as Benson and Stabler (Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni) investigate when a 10-year-old girl goes missing (9 p.m. NBC).

Modern Family: The sitcom returns for a new season (9 p.m. ABC).

Cougar Town: The comedy returns for another season (9:30 p.m. ABC).

The Defenders: A lawyer (Jim Belushi) and his partner (Jerry O'Connell) hire a recent grad (Jurnee Smollett), who paid her tuition working as a stripper, in this new comedy (10 p.m. CBS).

The Whole Truth: Starting with the arrest of a suspect in a crime, this new series follows the prosecution and defense teams. Maura Tierney and Rob Morrow star (10 p.m. ABC).


Baseball: The Texas Rangers visit the Angels (7 p.m. FSN); the San Diego Padres visit the Dodgers (7 p.m. FS Prime).
