Robert Downey Jr. plays Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective in the brash 2009 actioner “Sherlock Holmes” at 10 p.m. on Cinemax.

Being Human: The truth about the vampire massacre comes out in this new episode of the supernatural drama (6 and 9 p.m. BBC America). Celebrity Ghost Stories: 1980s pop star Debbie Gibson is featured in this new installment of the spooky series (6 and 10 p.m. Biography). Dogs 101: This canine-centric series returns with new episodes (8 p.m. Animal Planet).

America’s Most Wanted: America Fights Back: The true crime series hosted by John Walsh marks the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks as part of its season premiere (9 p.m. Fox).


Broken Lizard Stands Up: Members of the comedy troupe take the stage in this special (midnight Comedy Central).


Couples Retreat: Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman join their significant others for a tropical getaway in this 2009 comedy (8 p.m. HBO). Everybody’s Fine: Robert De Niro is a curmudgeonly patriarch in this 2009 tale costarring Drew Barrymore (8 p.m. Showtime).

Mandrake: A plant-animal hybrid wreaks havoc in this 2010 made-for-cable creature (9 p.m. Syfy).

Captain Horatio Hornblower: Gregory Peck plays the titular naval hero in this 1951 adventure (9 p.m. TCM).


Tennis: The U.S. Open nears its conclusion with the Men’s Semifinals (9 a.m. CBS) and the Women’s Final (5 p.m. CBS)

College football: Michigan meets Notre Dame (12:30 p.m. NBC), the UCLA Bruins visit Stanford (7:30 p.m. ESPN), and the USC Trojans host Virginia (7:30 p.m. FS Prime).
