‘The Bachelorette’: Ali and Roberto talk about the future -- a ‘simple’ life without lavish helicopter rides

Let’s face it: this hasn’t been the best year for couples whose relationships began on “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette.”

In June, last season’s “Bachelor” Jake Pavelka and his fiancee Vienna Girardi broke up after only a few months together. They engaged in a nasty tabloid war and then aired their dirty laundry in a tell-all interview on ABC.

That followed the end of the on-again, off-again relationship between seventh season “Bachelor” Charlie O’Connell and Sarah Brice. Even former “Bachelorette” Jillian Harris and her beau Ed Swiderski -- who managed to stay somewhat out of the media glare by living in Chicago – called it quits last month.

So as much as we want to believe that Ali Fedotowsky and her fiance Roberto Martinez will make it to the altar -– we’re skeptical, to say the least.

Still, on a conference call Tuesday morning, the newly engaged pair said they’re confident they can avoid the pitfalls that unglamorous post-reality show life presents.

“I think we’re both really simple,” Fedotowsky said. “We appreciate the simple things in life -– so we don’t want the helicopters and the crazy lavishness of all the dates. We just want to hold hands walking down the street.”

“For me, throughout the whole show, we had all these amazing dates,” added Martinez, “but I always kind of kept it in perspective, like, ‘This isn’t what our normal life will be like, going on all these lavish dates.’ Early on, I pictured my life with her, doing simple things.”

That “simple” life, the couple said, will involve living in their new apartment in San Diego away from the curious eye of the paparazzi.

“Roberto was offered to start his agency in Beverly Hills, and we didn’t want to do that, because we thought that would put a lot of stress on our relationship,” explained Fedotowsky. “A lot of potential paparazzi following us everywhere — San Diego is so beautiful and peaceful. It’s gonna be a great place for us to start a relationship together.”

In San Diego, Martinez said he will focus on his insurance career and leave his professional baseball ambitions behind him.

“Baseball is definitely a part of my past, unless the Yankees call me up and need a starting pitcher,” he joked.

Fedotowsky said she is interested in working with charities, but is not entirely sure yet what line of work she will go into. She doubts, however, that she will return to her old job at Facebook. The pair also said they’d consider being on “Dancing With the Stars” -– though denied reports they’d already been asked to participate.

Meanwhile, Chris Lambton, whom Fedotowsky sent home early on Monday’s finale, still seemed down in the dumps about being rejected. Perhaps most surprising was that he didn’t sound all that enthused about the prospect of being the new “Bachelor.”

“Honestly, it’s something that I’ll have to think long and hard about, because it was hard watching so much of my personal life and intimate details of dating and love on TV,” he said. “It’s hard to share that kind of thing with however many millions of people watch the show. So it’s definitely something I’ll have to really, really think about. I’m not really sure if I really want to share all that again.”

Before appearing on Fedotowsky’s season, he said, he’d never watched “The Bachelorette” before, and he wasn’t aware of how emotional the process might get.

“Right when [she let me go] I didn’t expect it. I was, like, shocked, and the next thing you know, I was on a plane going back to LA,” he said. “It didn’t set in for a couple of days, honestly.”

From the sound of it, Lambton may not need to enter into a quest for love on national television to find his future wife. One eager woman already left a rose on the door of his house in Cape Cod, Mass. with a note reading: ‘If Ali doesn’t give you her rose, will you accept mine?’

There are also plenty of fans interested in his dad, a widower who lost recently lost his wife.

“That’s the one thing I can say, is that I’ve gotten nothing but positive response,” said Lambton. “And my dad has gotten as many letters and emails asking him out as I have.”
