“CSI: NY” has a different kind of case to solve: getting a new partner for Det. Mac Taylor.

Melina Kanakaredes, who has starred as Det. Stella Bonasera for six seasons, announced Monday that she will depart the series.

“We hoped Melina would return to ‘CSI: NY’ for another season, but we respect her decision to move on,” read a joint statement from CBS Television Network and CBS Television Studios. “She will forever remain a friend to the network and studio and we wish her the very best.”

Kanakaredes, who’s also known for her portrayal of Dr. Sydney Hansen on NBC’s defunct drama “Providence,” also issued a statement: “I made some amazing and lifelong friendships during my six seasons on ‘CSI: NY’ … and I will treasure them forever!”

The announcement of Kanakaredes’ exit comes just days before the seventh season starts production. No word yet on whether she will appear in Season 7 to end her character’s story or if a new character will be introduced.

The series moves to a new time period this fall, airing Fridays at 9 p.m. on CBS.
