‘American Idol’ isn’t big enough for Simon Cowell anymore, but maybe the world is.

The British TV producer, who spent a tribute-filled last episode as a judge on ‘Idol’ recently, said over the weekend that he wants to launch a show called ‘World’s Got Talent,’ according to the London Sun. It would build on the ‘Got Talent’ format that already exists in nearly 40 countries, including the U.S., and pit global competitors against each other on one stage (London’s Royal Albert Hall).

Cowell tried a similar international approach with ‘Idol’ in 2003, but it bombed. The new show is targeted for British TV and, reportedly, NBC in the U.S.

So far, The Sun is the only source of this information, so we’re trying to track down confirmation.

Cowell has proven to have the Midas touch on a number of TV shows, including ‘The X Factor,’ which he’s bringing to American audiences on Fox next year, and ‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ which discovered singing sensation Susan Boyle. NBC’s solid summer series, ‘America’s Got Talent,’ kicked off its new season last week with the usual assortment of singers, dancers and plate-spinners, along with comedian/TV vet Howie Mandel (stepping in for David Hasselhoff) and returning judges Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne.

Cowell discussed his ‘World’s Got Talent’ plans at this weekend’s 63rd British Academy of Film and Television Awards, where he was recognized for finding and developing new talent.
