NBC rounded out its pickups Saturday with a perfect dozen.
And that means that Paul Reiser is headed back to NBC. The network has picked up ‘Next,’ a single-camera comedy that spoofs Reiser’s travails with personal relationships. Written by Jonathan Shapiro (‘Boston Legal’) in a co-production with Reiser, it is shot in documentary style and follows a fictionalized version of Reiser as he balances life as a husband, father and friend.
Reiser gave NBC one of its biggest hits in the 1990s with ‘Mad About You,’ a romantic comedy costarring Helen Hunt.
The rest of the cast includes: Amy Landecker (‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’), Duane Martin (‘Rita Rocks’), Ben Shenkman (‘Damages’), Andrew Daly (‘The Life and Times of Tim’), Omid Djalili (‘Gladiator’), Koby Rouviere (‘How I Met Your Mother’), and Brock Waidmann.
NBC is not expected to pick up any more new shows. The network has ordered eight dramas and four single-camera comedies.
[Updated: May 17, 3:31 p.m. The correct title of this comedy is ‘The Paul Reiser Show.’ ‘Next’ is a former title.]
