Is the world ready for martini-swilling Muppets?

Whether it is or not, there’s a new game show coming called ‘Late Night Liars’ that has nothing to do with ‘Rainbow Connection’ or any Henson creations of years past. Hosted by actor/comedian Larry Miller and launching on GSN next month, the original series will feature a handful of puppets who’ll be boozing it up and telling tall tales. Two contestants -- they’ll be humans -- will try to separate the fact from the fiction to win cash and prizes.

The show comes from Henson Alternative, obviously a more adult division of the family-friendly Jim Henson Co., even though GSN’s announcement compares ‘Late Night Liars’ to classicgame shows like ‘To Tell the Truth’ and ‘Hollywood Squares.’

Miller, who’ll have a rodent puppet sidekick called The Weasel, said he’s looking forward to working alongside the sauced ‘celebrities.’ According to a GSN statement, he said that ‘Jim Henson made a great discovery many years ago when he realized that pretending puppets are people is far easier than dealing with people who are puppets.’

Huh?

The cast of characters includes Shelley Oceans, a loud, bawdy TV personality and actress; William A. Mummy, a mummy dubbed ‘Mister Double Entendre’; and Sir Sebastian Simian, a billionaire adventurer with Richard Branson-esque overtones (except he’s an ape).

The idea’s a real head-scratcher, but the execution could go either way: brilliant or bust. Guess we’ll see if anyone shows up on June 10 at 11 p.m.
