Syfy is hoping that Stephen King will lead the network to another summer hit when it premieres ‘Haven’ this summer.

Based on King’s novella ‘The Colorado Kid,’ the series stars Emily Rose (‘ER’) as an FBI agent who arrives in a small Maine town to solve the murder of a local ex-con. Her natural curiosity eventually leads her to discover that the town, Haven, is an enclave for people with a remarkable range of supernatural abilities.

Although the agent, Audrey Parker, will solve mysteries every week, her back story will develop over the course of the season.

‘Why she’s been brought there, what’s going on with her, her history, that’s a mystery that’s unfolding,’ Rose said. ‘Every week there’s something different she’s encountering in this small town.’

The series was written by Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn and is executive produced by Scott Shepherd, who all were behind Stephen King’s ‘The Dead Zone.’

‘’The Colorado Kid’ is a back story, said Mark Stern, Syfy’s senior vice president of original content. ‘These guys have done a great job of incorporating it into a larger franchise. The bones of ‘The Colorado Kid’ are definitely buried in this larger franchise.’

Rose and Stern spoke at a press event hosted by NBC Universal on Monday at the Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena.

‘Haven’ premieres on July 19 at 10 p.m.
