David Anders joins 'The Vampire Diaries' family tree

It speaks to the success of "The Vampire Diaries" that it's already able to pull in such heavy-hitter guest stars in its freshman season. Fan favorite David Anders is set to join the ranks of other "Diaries" guest stars like Sean Faris, Melinda Clarke and Jasmine Guy.

Best known for his work on high-action series like "Alias," "Heroes" and, most recently, "24," Anders is expected to join the cast as Jeremy and Elena's uncle Jonathan.

Fans of the series have already met a different Jonathan Gilbert, who was a crucial player in the Mystic Falls vampire hunt of 1864. If the events of the most recent episode are anything to go by, it seems his namesake may arrive in town just in time for yet another showdown with the undead.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns Thursday, March 25, at 8 p.m. with a new episode. In the meantime, check out the promo below, and use that comment feature to weigh in on Anders' casting!
