Fourth-place NBC, embroiled in a late-night talk-show host controversy, continued to catch grief this evening at an unlikely place: on the red carpet of the Golden Globes.

When Billy Bush of ‘Access Hollywood’ welcomed movie star Julia Roberts as she made her way into the Golden Globes award show, Roberts said: ‘NBC, you guys are in the toilet right now.’ Bush, who was hosting the red carpet show, seemed taken aback.

Tom Hanks, who was standing alongside Roberts and his wife, Rita Wilson, didn’t miss a beat and suggested that the annoying drizzle was just another part of NBC’s troubles. ‘NBC said the rain would be on at 10 o’clock, but then they moved it to 11:30,’ Hanks joked. NBC is broadcasting the Golden Globes.

NBC executives continued this afternoon to try to negotiate a settlement with Conan O’Brien, a deal that would see ‘The Tonight Show’ host leave his gig after just seven months. NBC is trying to make room for Jay Leno after it canceled his 10 p.m. talk show. NBC wants to return the longtime, long-chinned host to 11:35 p.m., and O’Brien is refusing to go along with the network’s plans.

[Update: 5:31 p.m. Most of the applause during host Ricky Gervais’ monologue came after he said: ‘Let’s get on with this before NBC replaces me with Jay Leno.’]
