ABC shuts Adam Lambert out of 'Kimmel': Is the FCC to blame?

That naughty American Music Awards performance isn't going to be behind Adam Lambert anytime soon.

Even after his well-received performance on "The Early Show" last week, ABC continues to feel uncomfortable around Lambert. His Dec. 17 "Jimmy Kimmel Live" appearance was canceled today--news Lambert himself delivered on his Twitter page an hour ago.

The performance on Kimmel's live stage was scheduled before Lambert made his now infamous debut on the AMAs on Nov. 22.  In one of his tweets about the matter, Lambert told his fans not to blame ABC but rather "It's the FCC heat."

It's not clear whether ABC told Lambert to put the blame there or if the "American Idol" runner-up is making his own assumptions. But we do know the following: The FCC doesn't monitor programming after 10 p.m. Don't believe us? The following is an excerpt from its website:

"The FCC has determined, with the approval of the courts, that there is a reasonable risk that children will be in the audience from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., local time. Therefore, the FCC prohibits station licensees from broadcasting indecent material during that period.

"Material is indecent if, in context, it depicts or describes sexual or excretory organs or activities in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium...The 'safe harbor' refers to the time period between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., local time. During this time period, a station may air indecent and/or profane material."

We are not saying Lambert is indecent, but, either way, it's been deemed OK for him to be after 10 p.m. (His AMA appearance, by the way, aired at 10:55 p.m.).

In a statement to The Times, an ABC spokeswoman made no mention of the FCC and would only explain the network's decision to disinvite Lambert from performing on "Kimmel" as follows, "We decided not to move forward with the booking at this time." ABC declined to be interviewed about the issue.

You will recall that ABC also disinvited Lambert from "Good Morning America" last week.  And to just make it a dissing trifecta, Lambert also tweeted that he was disinvited from performing on "New Year's Rockin' Eve." Sources at Dick Clark Productions, however, tell us those plans were never finalized.

Lambert assured his fans he will still appear on "The Jay Leno Show" and he thinks "it'll all blow over."

Do you?

Guess ABC finds Adam Lambert too hot to handle! I'll happily watch him on another station! Hope he gets another chance to perform "For Your Entertainment", sans harnesses and scaffolding. It's a hot dance song! However, there's several other songs that aren't pop/dance and they are great songs. BTW, hate to say, the AMA's started CST at 7 pm and ended at 10 pm. Hope it all ends well.

ABC I'm so disappointed. Adam is a considerate person. His moves were all great on the amas and were after hours. I will watch Adam any chance I get--he's so talented. I'm praying ABC quits acting like the egoic disciplinarian that can't admit it's making the wrong choices.

I think it's ridiculous that ABC cancelled Adam. I am a middle aged, straight, conservative , midwestern woman and I don't think it's right that they yank all those appearances from Adam. His performance on Ellen and the Early Show were just fine. Give the kid a chance. It just makes ABC look like fools. IMO

I cannot believe what I just saw...Pink doing the EXACT SAME THING.....

ABC sucks anyway. We never watch anything on it. The only reason we watched the AMA's on there was because Adam was going to be on the show, and the rest of the AMA show stunk.

ABC=LOSERS

Disgusted with ABC's treatment of Adam. Wish they would focus on more important things. I just don't get it. This crap needs to blow over cause it's ridiculous. If he would have had a girl up there instead, would he have had the same response?? Doubt it! Give him a break!

It doesn't matter if you thought his performance was tasteless or even outright disgusting - he was dropped from Good Morning America, has been absolutely gracious and conciliatory since then, and is even NOW trying to deflect possible blame away from ABC. ABC has already punished him once. This should be OVER. The network is just going to look increasingly ridiculous with every cancellation, so why do they continue?!

Fortunately, Adam will have no trouble finding events and venues to fill the new gaps in his schedule. ABC may be gun-shy but his most recent performances will reassure other organizations that he's safe to book (... for now ;) ).

This is so wrong of ABC for doing this to such a talented person. Hopefully
Adam will come out of this just fine. The album is AMAZING!!!

I am disgusted with ABC's bigotry and homophobia! I for one will not be watching the network any longer! (Which is too bad because I did enjoy some of their shows.) Ok, so the guy made a mistake, he has admitted that he went too far...get over it. We want to see Adam. ABC is cutting off their own foot by alienating a large group of viewers. Too bad for them. ABC, you are cowards!!!

Just for the record, Adam's performance on the AMA's was shown before 10:00 in the Midwest. I was not offended in the least by it and I am a 48 year old married woman. Over the top, sexual, and stunning is what I expect from Adam and that is what make him so delicious!

We wish Adam the best ever! I and my family are UNCONDITIONAL supporters of Adam. We love and RESPECT him. Adam, you are the best performer we have seen since late Freddy M., we are mesmerized by your voice and charisma and we want you to be part of our daily musical life FOREVER. Many hugs and good wishes, good luck, good positive spirit......... WE LOVE YOU DEARLY! omg..... You can't imagine how much we actually love and RESPECT you!

I am unable to write. . anymore because of tears in my eyes. Young man………..you were sent!

ABC makes me sick, I think is just to unfair and there is a double standard. I am not watching ABC until Adam is on.

Rock on Adam Lambert. it is true that female performers have gotten away with worse stuff.

ABC cancelling Adam sends a sad message. They deemed it ok to have a man who pleaded guilty to assault and battery on a female on JKL on 11/18 (guess they hoped that was forgotten), but cancel Adam for a male on male kiss and some bump&grind. He has been humble and gracious. Not to mention another convicted felon woman beater scheduled to be on GMA. Shame on ABC for what they are trying to do to that you man.

I think ABC is very wrong and has gone from "making a point" to becoming the bully on the block. However, I do want to point out that Adam's performaance was at 9:55 in the Central time zone. You know what I think? I think the show was supposed to run 5 minutes over and didn't and now they are using Adam as their scapegoat. They pimped the "shocking performance" all week and all night. Now they won't own up to knowing how it would be. BTW, I was not offended in the least. It was no worse than 5 other sexually charged performances that night.

This is ridiculous. We are in 2009. ABC totally sucks! Adam will prevail and he will have the last laugh in the end. Everyone wants to see him on TV. Oh well, this is ABC's loss.

ABC is being disingenuous at best, profoundly cowardly at worst. For Ms. Sweeney of ABC over-react in this way is absurd. Even the puritanical group who originally complained have stated that they did not think ABC needed to cancel Adam's GMA performance. For caving in to a supposed 1500 when the show was watched by 14,000,000 is ridiculous. As a Disney shareholder and a fan of "Modern Family," I'm dismayed to say I think it's time to sell, and sadly, I'm removing one of my favorite shows from my record schedule until ABC comes to it's senses.

I think ABC made a big mistake. ABC President stated that the reasoning for cancelling Lambert's GMA performance was due to the many children that watch their news program. Those children are in school during GMA & the ones that are still home are under the age of 4. They have the attention span of a puppy. Children are watching a 50 year old mouse or a purple dinosaur not GMA.

This last cancellation by ABC of Adam Lambert has lead me to the decision to boycott ABC or cancel them to coin their term. Double standards are getting really old. Pink did the exact move that simulated oral sex on the Billboard Music Awards in 2004 but I guess that was art. *insert eye roll here*

If ABC is going to get upset over simulated sex acts, they need to evaluate all their evening programming. I find the actions of the network to be dispicable in this day and age. Such blatant censorship and discrimination is ugly and dishonorable. ABC should have moved forward after the GMA cancelation. Now they look petty and homophobic. Adam made his mistakes. He came clean about that on Ellen. He was moving on. ABC should have followed suit and done the same. Honestly, we should send FCC complaints regarding every prime time ABC show with sexual content if they are going to take this agressive stance against Adam Lambert. The arts have always been our free-est realm of expression. ABC is setting us back as a society 100 years.

This is causing an uproar. adam lambert is a beautiful person and singer and a very captivating and compelling personality. his fans are vast..from really young to really old, women, men, single, straight, gay, married, grandparents. we are passionate. ABC is being disgusting with their cancellations and alienating many many viewers. i am disgusted with ABC...see ya later ABC..you got nothing i want!!

We don't have to go back to 2004 to see the double standard and biggotry. Here we see it in 2009 on a longer display of oral simulation than the AMAs in early prime time: Dancing with the Stars Mambo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo-eMFnRi0M at minutes 2:20 to 2:24. This is America and freedom of artistic expression should never be allowed to be repressed. ABC is play the Beijing card!! Please go to ABC.com come and complain because this is scary. Adam broke no laws.

I'd just like to say that I am furious and nearly physically sick over all of this. Adam has been nothing but gracious and respectful about this, and ABC buries its head in the sand -- refusing to respond and explain?

As someone who was a loyal and ecstatic Disney World fanatic, I will not have anything to do with that mega-industry for the rest of my life if they don't apologize to Adam. Eat that, Mickey!!!!
