[Updated] Lou Dobbs resigns from CNN

CNN host Lou Dobbs resigned from the network today, saying that he has been urged by political and business leaders to leave his television platform to “engage in constructive problem-solving” on national issues. He said today's show was his last.

“Over the past six months, it’s become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us,” Dobbs said, adding that he’s considering pursuing a number of options.

“As for the important work of restoring inspiration to our great free society and our market economy, I will strive to be a leader in that national conversation,” he said.

Dobbs’ break with CNN comes after he worked at the network for more than a quarter century, starting with its inception in 1980, often clashing with network executives in the process. While he originally led the network’s business coverage, in recent years Dobbs developed a populist persona that has increasingly been out of step with the network’s emphasis on neutral reporting. He has railed about the country’s immigration policy and used his show to raise questions about the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.

Several months ago, CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein discussed with Dobbs tamping down the opinion on his show, something he agreed to do. But his presence on CNN continued to be a source of friction within the network. Liberal groups have been calling for CNN to let him go and on Wednesday celebrated his resignation.

“Our contention all along was that Lou Dobbs – who has a long record of spreading lies and conspiracy theories about immigrants and Latinos – does not belong on the ‘most trusted name in news,’ ” said Roberto Lovato, co-founder of Presente.org, a national online advocacy organization coordinating BastaDobbs.com, a Latino-led coalition. “We are thrilled that Dobbs no longer has this legitimate platform from which to incite fear and hate.”

[Updated]: CNN President Jon Klein issued the following statement today: "Lou Dobbs is a valued founding member of the CNN family. For decades, Lou fearlessly and tirelessly pursued some of the most important and complex stories of our time, often well ahead of the pack. All of us will miss his appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom, and we're grateful to have known and worked with him over the years. With characteristic forthrightness, Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere. We respect his decision and wish him, Debi, and his family the very best."

Constant criticism is not a sigh of intelligence. Dobbs rarely had any solutions - only a whole lot of negative criticism. I hope he runs as an Independent and finally starts to realize how difficult politics an compromise can be. I'm glad he is leaving CNN.

If you want to see neutral journalism, watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or the Colbert Show, not CNN, FOX or MSBBC. Stewart and Colbert are way far more objective and unbiased than Dobbs, Hannity or O;Reilly... and less bitter, by the way.

To the folks mentioning that CNN, MSNBC and Fox are partisan rather than impartial, I recommend checking out BBC News America. It's rather refreshing to see both U.S. news as well as world news that isn't just a condensed "global minute."

hopefully, Mr . Dobbs will take up politics. California needs a new Governor, and two Senators as well as a Pelosi replacement. I hope Rep. Miller decides to seek a senate or governor position.
He should join forces with FoxNews and Palin and they need to form a coalition to support the return to American values that have been in place for over 200 years.

Goodbye and good riddance. CNN's much better off without such an obviously bigoted human being as one of its headliners.

I bet that Fox News will accept his racism and paranoid conspiracy theories with open arms.

Dobbs was a news commentator, not a journalist, and the police who investigated his claim of an armed attack on him home dismissed it as unsubstatiated i.e. it was false and a publicity stunt.

Good luck to you Lou Dobbs in whatever you decide to do. Just please do not go to Fox News, you have too much class for them.

Good riddance....
I think Lou Dobbs, "Never met a man, he didn't dislike...!!!"
He'll fit in nicely at the most arrogant, self-centered, wing-nut network,
Fox Noise....!!!

Memo to Orin H | November 11, 2009 at 05:44 PM: To quote the chicken rancher in 'Napoleon Dynamite,' "I don't understand a word you just said."

I will miss Lou Dobbs...how quickly everyone forgets how he championed for the two Border Patrol officers that were sent to prison for shooting an illegal immigrant. I remember watching his show and saying he would never give up and would fight the cause for their release...by the way, this illegal immigrant was caught again with drugs..where's the Justice in that for these two Border Patrol Agents who were protecting our country and end up going to prison...I am Hispanic and hope that everyone who is not here legally, should be deported no matte what nationality..God Bless America.

CNN needs to take their communist President and socialist views to Russia. Good for Lou for giving them a 0 rating now. Hows that Obama care working out for you California Libs ??

I am surprised he stuck it out as long as he did in that Liberal environment. Maybe he will move over to Fox Business channel now. CNN has been a source for a lot of first rate talent for Fox. Time to "Move Up" Lou. Come on over to the leader in Cable news that consistently polls ahead of all the other cable news channels combined every night.

Let's see. That should leave CNN with about 69 remaining viewers. Liberals are so funny. They celebrate Dobbs' departure, yet apparently don't think about how long it will take him to sign on with Fox News.

Well, fair and balanced I report. You decide.

I hope FOX picks up Lou Dobbs...he was the person I was watching on CNN...done with CNN...I watch FOX news..the real news.

Say it isn't so! Lou was the ONLY reason my channel would ever stop on CNN. Amazing how all these liberals feel threatened by one single man and one single conservative FOX news, but are completely blinded by their own liberal lunatics. The venom that people spew about Lou Dobbs, yet he's concidered the "hateful" one? Give me a break. He's just not following the blind. Lou Dobbs is a true American Patriot and I will miss him deeply.

Good riddance Lou. Who could understand what he was saying anyway?

I like the fact that Lou Dobbs spoke about many issues other broadcasters generally ignored. We talk so much about healthcare these days but we always hear the same things. I remember Lou talking about healthcare a few years back. He was making the point that murders who are locked up in prison are granted 100% of their healthcare as a basic right. Whats more, that healthcare is being paid for by obedient, law abiding citizens who often times go without healthcare. The irony is almost unbearable. I've liked Lou and his brutally honest style ever since he had the gumption to report on healthcare as he did.

Ding Dong the Witch is Dead!

Lou Dobbs' America is about as imaginary as the Land of Oz - but dark and paranoid. Time to Get Real!

It really is about time. You can't claim to be a legitimate news organization with a host like Dobbs. I'm sure there's a home for him on Fox, where his commentary belongs. I doubt he'd have a problem with that. He might not be in the Beck/Hannity category yet, but that's certainly where he's headed.

I haven't listened to CNN since the first Gulf War. I humbly hope and pray they go away. They are the worst anti-American propaganda since Hanoi Jane
