The mama drama between Pam and Michael was put on hold this week as the office harped on Michael over his most recent, and absurd, gaffe.

The episode opened with the Dunder Mifflin crew awaiting the arrival of a group of kiddies who were visiting to see the haunted house that was set up in the warehouse -- how’d that field trip get set up? Kelly sported a ‘Fifth Element’ costume. Meredith dressed as a hobo. Michael? Why he was rocking the suggestive costume at left, of course!

Wonder if the children’s parents agreed to that when they signed the permission slips. But I’m sure the youngsters were completely oblivious to the box strapped to his waist once Michael hung himself from a harness with a noose around his neck. I was hoping the rest of the episode would follow the Halloween theme, but it wasn’t.

The majority of the episode centered around Michael falling into a koi pond while at a business meeting with Jim — a trip he alone was going to make until corporate insisted Michael accompany him. He stepped on and killed a fish in the process — a tragic fate that could have been avoided (we later learn once the staff got ahold of the security footage) had his co-manager reached out and helped.

But with Jim holding a grudge because corporate felt he needed babysitting, he stood by as Michael made a splash in the lobby. (Really, though, why is there a koi pond in the lobby of an office building?) It provided for good character development.

Laid-back Jim, the dude who doesn’t take work stuff too seriously, is slowly evolving into a stern businessman and the power struggle between him and Michael is becoming an issue. And, in this episode, it allowed for a tender — and somewhat awkward — moment for Michael who, in an attempt to divert attention away from his blunder by making fun of himself, revealed his insecurities in front of the staff.

Then there was the matter between Dwight and Jim. Bugged devices aside, Dwight’s scorn still materialized in a confessional: ‘Jim is my enemy. But it appears that Jim is also his own worst enemy. And the enemy of my enemy is my friend, so Jim is actually my friend. But he’s his own worst enemy, and the enemy of my friend is my enemy, so he’s my enemy. But ...’ Confused? Ditto.

Other highlights of the episode:

  • Jim never disappoints with his Halloween attire. This year, having “book” scrawled across his face allowed for a simple, yet brilliant costume: ‘Yes, I’m the popular social networking site known as Bookface.’ A-maz-ing.
  • Pam finding the thought of her and Andy being a couple laughable. The things the staff said they’d rather not be teased about: Dwight’s small nose (‘Did you sneeze it off?’), Kevin’s “big gut” and Angela’s squirrel-like eating … and Meredith had sex with a terrorist?
  • Of course Creed has a worm guy.
  • Of course. ‘I date models — face models. My girlfriend, on a scale of 1 to Gisele? A nine. Pam’s carrying our surrogate, because my girlfriend needed to keep her figure for Fashion Week.’ Oh, Andy.
  • And is another office romance brewing between Andy and a certain receptionist? Erin thinks Andy’s the coolest guy she’s ever met. Like Marlon Wayans.

What did you think of this week’s episode? Were you sad to hear Michael didn’t have five friends to add to his T-Mobile Fave 5 feature? Would you like to see Andy and Erin take their relationship to the next level?
