Desperate Housewives: Bree (Marcia Cross) comes to the rescue as Katherine (Dana Delany) goes off the deep end over losing Mike (James Denton); Susan (Teri Hatcher) discovers Julie (Andrea Bowen) has been keeping secrets (9 p.m. ABC).

Masterpiece Mystery! The murder of a small-time criminal could be connected to a botched murder attempt from years earlier directed at an Oxford don who has become famous for being an atheist, but as Lewis and Hathaway (Kevin Whately, Laurence Fox) investigate they uncover a case of mistaken identity that may lead them to the killer (9 p.m. KCET).

Monty Python: Almost the Truth (The Lawyer’s Cut): This documentary mini-series looks back at the production of the classic comedy import. In the premiere, ‘The Not So Interesting Beginnings,’ the comedy group’s members discuss how their careers led them to ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus.’ With Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and Eric Idle (9 p.m. IFC).

Dexter: With Rita (Julie Benz) and the children out of town, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is home alone (9 p.m. Showtime).

American Dad: Francine teaches Roger to be self-sufficient hoping that he can get his own place in this new episode (9:30 p.m. Fox).

The Kennedy Assassination: 24 Hours After: Previously withheld transcripts and film footage help piece together the 24 hours after the fatal shots were fired at President Kennedy (9 p.m. History).

MOVIES

High Sierra: Humphrey Bogart stars as gangster Roy ‘Mad Dog’ Earle in director Raoul Walsh’s tough, effective 1941 melodrama. With Ida Lupino and Joan Leslie (3:15 p.m. TCM).

Occupation: The Iraq war provides the backdrop for this intense 2009 TV drama about three British soldiers (James Nesbitt, Lubna Azabal and Stephen Graham) who, after trying to readjust to civilian life, return to duty in Basra (5 and 9 p.m. BBC America).

Mamma Mia! A huge success onstage, the musical inspired by the songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA stars Amanda Seyfried as a young bride-to-be who wants to know her father’s identity before she walks down the aisle. Her mother (Meryl Streep) isn’t much help on that count, so she invites the likeliest candidates (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard) to the wedding (8 p.m. Cinemax).

Sorority Wars: A college freshman makes enemies when she refuses to pledge her mother’s sorority in this 2009 TV movies starring Lucy Hale and Courtney Thorne-Smith (9 p.m. Lifetime).
